Winter, 2013 – Call for Curricular Congress
• Open invitation to plan and implement curricular flexibility
• Take advantage of available class sections with 15
added classrooms
• Modular coursework but still apply to Core and Major
requirements
• Time Frame, study/discuss Feb-Mar 2013; propose
April-May 2013; begin implementation Fall 2013 with
early stage

Stage 1: Discovery Curriculum – 1, 1.5, 2 credit classes;
Open Block; heavy use of Coastal Science Center
• Rationale:
– Increase student interest;
– Increase faculty expertise connecting with student interest;
– Increase student retention.

Stage 2: Interdisciplinary Intensive Curriculum 6 & 9 credit
courses
• Rationale:
– Provide more integrated learning/teaching
– Appeal to students choosing majors
– Appeal to students wanting dual majors; more mix of
majors/minors

Increase opportunities to double count sections for
requirements (CORE and Major’ Dual Degrees; Majors and
/Minors).
A course can count for more than one student learning
outcome.
Faculty teaching load computed on a two-year rolling average
– sometimes under-defined load; sometimes over-defined
load.
Faculty teaching load will reflect teaching in/out of department
and in/out of college supported by FTE SCH generation.
Create a banking system for compensation of dissertation;
thesis; independent study credit.

• In each college provide at least one three-year degree
program, including commitment to offering summer
coursework for high-flying students (likely not average
students).
