“Spirit of Charity” program

Our patients:
 Trauma patients
 Those in the neighborhood who need emergency care
 Patients who have historically come to the Charity
system and feel that they get the best care there
 Those without insurance – no “wallet biopsy” at
University Hospital

Our missions:
 Diversity within our residency to reflect the diversity
of our patients
 Cultural competence within the residency
 Delivery of the best possible care to our patients

Applications
 Applications of medically underrepresented
minority backgrounds are encouraged
 Meet and greets are arranged for applicants to
meet other residents and faculty from varied
backgrounds

Mentoring
 We are seeking out mentoring relationships with
historically African American medical schools such
as Meharry Medical College
 We are pursuing additional relationships with
summer programs and community colleges aimed
at increased exposure of future physicians in our
community to the field of Emergency Medicine
 We look forward to an increased mentoring role
with members of SNMA from both Tulane and
LSU

Curriculum
 Conference presentations aimed at exploring
health care disparities and the history of racism in
the medical field
 Journal club articles examining health care
disparities
 Professionalism committee established to help
medical residents and faculty communicate
effectively with our patients
