What and Who they are For
How SNS make money
Money pumped into social networking sites such as
MySpace and Facebook.
July 22, 2008
• Huge bulk of the
money they make are
from advertisements
• Reason: Companies
use them as an
avenue to reach out
to a vast number of
people
• A win-win situation for
SNS: profit and large
user network
How much money do they
make?
My Space
• 2006: $900 million, 3-year
deal with Google
• 2008: expected to haul in
$700 - $800 million,
mostly in advertising
Facebook
• 2008: $300 = $350 million
Xing, a business-contact list service popular in Europe, says its revenue doubled in
2007 — to $30 million, from 2006 — because of premium subscriptions, an ecommerce marketplace and banner ads.
The Technology of Social
Networking
• Several avenues for social
networking
– Web Based Services (Facebook,
MySpace)
– Handheld Based Services (Cell
phones, GPS)
• Increasingly the two “spheres”
are getting linked together
The Future of SNS
• Computers will assist us with
remembering and learning about
other people
• Because of increasing computing
power, people will be able to
walk into a room and “discover”
who is around them, including
relationship status, interests, and
other information
• Will likely be a microchip
implanted into your skin in the
next 20 years.
