Le Chatelier Equilibrium
There is a stress or a
disturbance to the
current equilibrium.
• Stresses can be:
• 1 – Extra or Removed Reactant or Product
• 2 – Extra or Removed Temperature/Heat
• 3 – Extra or Removed Pressure
The system can provide
relief and fix itself by
temporarily adjusting
rxn rates to
compensate.
• There are only two possible responses:
• 1 – Shift equilibrium to right / Favor forward rxn
• 2 – Shift equilibrium to left / Favor reverse rxn
There are consequences
to these responses that
change concentrations
of both reactants and
products.
• There are two sets of consequences:
• 1 - If shifts right… the concentration of anything
on left decreases and anything on right
increases.
• 2 - If shifts left… the concentration of anything
on the right decreases and anything on the left
increases.
