Thesis Phases and Deadlines
Role of Graduate Council
Established in November of 2011
Facilitate and coordinate graduate education in the following
ways/areas:
• Support graduate recruitment programs
• Provide information about graduate admissions
• Follow up to ensure the uniform implementation of policies governing
graduate work
• Encourage the development
•
and success of students
Provide mechanisms for quality control for all aspects of graduate
education
How We Can Help
• Advise students on general university graduate policy
• In matters related to your program of study, your Academic Advisor and
Department Chair are the primary reference
• In all other matters, we refer students to the appropriate individuals and entities
• Help students to
– Comply with regulations
– Meet deadlines
• Propose means of enhancing graduate student life
– Based on our own analysis
– Based on feedback of students, faculty, and staff
Thesis Phases
• Proposal
– The requirements of the proposal are determined by the Department
– Minimum requirements: Committee & Topic
– Details found in the Graduate Catalogue (current catalogue is 2014-15)
– Master’s thesis: pp. 58-60
– PhD thesis: pp. 65-68 (same as above)
• Defense
– Must happen no less than 4 months after the proposal for Master’s students
– … 8 months … for PhD students
• Library Submission
– Approximately 10 days after published defense deadlines
• Holidays and weekends are taken into consideration
– Refer to the Thesis Manual for details (covered by next presenter)

• Thesis deadlines are published on the Graduate Council web site:

• Abiding by the deadlines is absolutely necessary for graduating in the target
semester
