Academic Senate
Restructuring Study
Structure & Functions
Doug Leibinger, Chair, S&F
Richard Whitkus, Chair, FSAC
Richard J. Senghas, Chair, Academic Senate
Laurel Holmström-Keyes, Senate Analyst
Why are we doing this?
1. Vacancy issues within governance.
2. We have grown and changed since by-laws written about
formula for representation on the Senate, etc.
3. We have observed governance in action and think we
could do better, building on what we see has and has not
worked here at SSU.
4. We have reviewed the literature written by scholars
about the context for governance today, what has proved
to be helpful in governance and the variety of
perspectives that can be used to analyze governance.
Why are we doing this?
Examples:
Improving Faculty Governance: Cultivating Leadership and
Collaboration in Decision-Making. Michael Miller (2003).
What is More Important to Effective Governance:
Relationships, Trust and Leadership, or Structures and
Formal Processes? Adrianna Kezar. (2004).

In addition to re-organization,
we are also thinking about. . .
1. Enhancing relationships and building trust between
members of governance; governance and the faculty as a
whole; governance and the administration.
1. Leadership development.
2. Annual orientation at First Senate meeting of the year.
3. Fostering good Senatorship and committee membership
participation.
4. Rewarding service in governance.
