Scientific Method
Problem/Purpose
• State the problem in
the form of a question
that includes the
independent and
dependent variable
• (Will a hard boiled egg float in salt water?)
• Hypothesis
If the amount of salt added
to the water increases,
then the hard boiled egg
will float)
• Educated guess to
solving the problem that
includes the independent
and dependent variables.
• If the independent
variable increases or
decreases, then the
dependent variable will
increase or decrease.
• Variables
• Parts of the experiment
independent
dependent
constant
• Independent (I.V.)
The scientist (you) change
on purpose.
(amount of salt)
• Dependent (D.V.)
• The response from the
change made to the
independent variable.
• Results
• (float or not float)
• Constant (C.V.)
• The item that does
not change at all. It
stays the same
Same beakers, same amount of water, same type of salt,
Same spoon, same classroom.
•Control
• No variable is applied
to the item
• Experiment
constant
no change
• Design an experiment to test
your problem using the three
(3) types of variables
(test 3 times for accuracy)
independent
amount of salt
dependent
float or not float
Record Findings
• Data Table
• Make a data table
showing your results
• Graph
• Make a graph to visually
show your results.
• Conclusion
• Restate your hypothesis
with the results from your
experiment
• Should be at least 3
paragraphs for formal
experiments.
