INFERENCING
What is it?
INFERENCING
Definition: Making a conclusion
based on the facts available!
Look at the next slide:
What inference can you make?
Did you conclude…
• Cows only pretend to act like animals
around humans!
What can you conclude from this?
He put down $10.00 at the window. The
woman behind the window gave $4.00.
The person next to him gave him $3.00,
but he gave it back to her.
So, when they went inside, she bought
him a large popcorn.
2. What was the weather like as
the men walked to the mine?
"The men walked down the streets to the
mine with their heads bent close to their
chests. In groups of five or six they
scurried on. It was impossible to recognize
individuals from the small gaps between
their caps, pulled down over their eyes,
and the tightly bound scarves tied tightly
over the bottom half of their faces".
3. What line is your proof for this answer?
"Rain lashed against the windows as Jane stamped up and down the
room stopping only to check the time on the mantle clock every five
minutes. Her book, bought with such enthusiasm the day before, was
flung carelessly in the corner beside the abandoned picnic basket.
Jane stamped her feet and began to repeat her earlier tedious
complaints against nature. Emily merely smiled to herself and carried
on reading the newspaper without as much as a nod of the head".
4. What was Jane planning to do that day?
5. How would you describe Jane’s mood?
6. What expression does the author use to suggest her disapproval of the
main character?
It seemed that the pitch had barely left the
southpaw's hand when the crowd resounded
with a loud thwack. Morgan dropped his head in
dejection as Ramirez began to trot the bases.
What just happened here?
How did the pitcher feel about serving up the home run?
8. What can you conclude from
this?
"You notice that the people next door, who
enjoy camping, are carefully loading their
car with camping gear. You overhear one
of them mentioning that they had better
not forget to cancel their newspaper for a
month."
The assassination of President John F. Kennedy has been
well covered since that day in 1963 when he was shot in
Dallas. Hundreds of authors have written books on the
assassination. Directors have filmed dozens of movies
about the president’s life and death. Internet users
constantly create new Web sites to provide a place for
people to post their thoughts on what has been called “The
Great Conspiracy” and the “Crime of the Century.”
9. You can tell from the passage that
A John F. Kennedy was the greatest president in history.
B many people are still interested in President Kennedy’s assassination.
C everyone has read books and seen movies about the assassination.
D the Kennedy assassination remains unsolved.
OBSERVING A SPACE CREATURE
Imagine that a spaceship stopped on a planet out in outer space. While the
astronauts explored the planet, they observed a strange organism. In their
report they wrote the following statements:
___ 10. The organism frowned to show it did not like strangers.
___ 11. The organism is green with brown spots.
___ 12. The organism lives near other organisms.
___ 13. The organism moved away from us because it was scared.
___ 14. The organism made gurgling noises.
___ 15. The organism had four toes on each foot and they were webbed.
___ 16. The organism has one blue eye and two green eyes.
___ 17. The planet must be hot because the creature is sweating.
___ 18. The organism moves real slow so he must be real old.
___ 19. The organism likes yellow plants because he was holding them.
Remember an observation is something you sense: taste, touch, smell, see, or
hear. An inference is something you decide or think about a thing or event after
you observe it. When were the astronauts observing? When were they deciding
something they really didn't observe? Tell whether each statement is an
inference or an observation by putting an I or an O in the space in front of
each number.
CHECK YOUR ANSWERS
_I__ 10. The organism frowned to show it did not like strangers.
_O_ 11. The organism is green with brown spots.
__O_ 12. The organism lives near other organisms.
__I_ 13. The organism moved away from us because it was scared.
_O__ 14. The organism made gurgling noises.
_O__ 15. The organism had four toes on each foot and they were webbed.
__O_ 16. The organism has one blue eye and two green eyes.
_I__ 17. The planet must be hot because the creature is sweating.
_I__ 18. The organism moves real slow so he must be real old.
_I__ 19. The organism likes yellow plants because he was holding them.
Do you see the difference
between a DETAIL and an
INFERENCE?
Just for fun! Can you make an inference?
Set up a page like the next slide
PHOTO INFERENCE
List 5 Details
List the inference
1. There is snow in the
mountain
1. It is cold at this place
2.
2.
3.
3.
4.
4.
5.
5.
What inferences can you make about this picture? Write
the detail and then make the inference. An example has
been done for you.
The last picture was of Manzanar.
This was a camp built during World War II to house Japanese-Americans because people were scared after
the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This was a terrible thing that happened in history, as American imprisoned other
Americans out of fear.
The camps were poorly built. People could not leave until after the war. Families were sometimes split up.
The American who were put in these camps, lost their houses and property.
There were armed guards keeping them here until the War was over.
Did you make any correct inferences?
• This is some type of military base: Houses look
like barracks.
• The houses were quickly built---tar paper on
sides.
• They were still building—wooden frames
• People had trouble breathing--lots of dirt and
dust
• Not a lot of fun—Only rows of houses
TAKE A LOOK AT MY BAG!
(NEXT SLIDE)
• What inferences can you make about this
person based on what is in my bag?
• 1
• 2.
• 3.
• 4.
• 5.
Here is the person who owns the
bag! Did you get the inferences
correct?
If you made other
inferences, do
you have a detail
to support that
inference?
You will now create your inference
man or girl!
•Step 1: you must make you bag first. List 5-7 items that
are found in the person’s room.
•Step 2: Make the answer key by creating the owner of
the stuff. (The looks of the person should match the stuff
in the bag)
•Step 3: On the front, write 5 inferences that can be
made from the bag. Give the detail and the inference.
Look at my example.
DUE FRIDAY: You will have time to continue to work on
this on Wednesday. It is not homework for tonight.
Create a bag on the back of your
paper man!
• Then create the key by making the person
who owns the bag!
• At the bottom of your man, describe
yourself and explain how I should have
figured you out based on what was in your
bag!
• (Do exactly what I did, but create your
own! Must be school appropriate!)
• Get out your man so you can finish.
• REMEMBER TO DO EVERYTHING IN
RED & THAT IS NUMBERED.
Context Clues
• Using clues in a sentence to help you find
the definition of a word is also inferencing!
Context clues are words in a sentence that
can you find the meaning of an unknown
word.
Try this one
Brea and Elizabeth are having a dispute
over which radio station to play at work.
It would be so much simpler if they both
liked the same kind of music.
41. A dispute is a __________.
• a. musical instrument
b. choice of music
c. discovery
d. disagreement
38. WHICH WORDS HELP YOU FIND
THE MEANING?
Try this one:
It’s a wonder to me how anyone can still be
undecided about this election. These two
candidates are certainly distinct. Each would
lead our nation in opposite directions.
42. What does “distinct” mean?
• A needing a bath
b. dishonest
c. clearly different
d. about the same age
Try this one:
Mr. Huge was very proud of his auto superstore.
“We have such an extensive selection of cars,”
he said, “so everyone should find a vehicle that
he or she will love!”
43. The word “extensive” means __________.
• a. costing a lot of money
b. large amount
c. having no color
d. not enough
TRY THIS ONE:
The reporter insisted that the letter he used was
authentic. He said that he had shown it to many
experts before he used it in his story.
44. When something is authentic, it’s __________.
• a. genuine, or real
b. carefully written
c. full of tasty worms
d. very old
50. WHICH WORDS HELP YOU FIND THE MEANING?
You will now do a context clue
worksheet.
1. Bubble the correct answer and highlight the words
that help you find the meaning.
2. Then you will finish your inferencing packet. This
will be taken for a grade.
3. Then make sure your man is finished. This is all
due Friday.
4. You need to work quietly and by yourself. Staple
your notes, inferencing packet, context clue sheet,
& man together.
