BIOLOGY
UNIT 1
CHARACTERISTICS
OF
LIVING THINGS
ORGANIZATION
All living things have 1 or more cells.
More complex organisms group their cells to
increase the level of function.
Cells Tissue
Organism
Organ
Systems
REPRODUCTION
2 types: Asexual(Bacteria) and Sexual (Plants)
Need to produce fertile offspring
Prevent extinction
GROWTH and DEVELOPMENT
Increase amount of material
Differentiation-specialized cells and
organs
Metamorphosis (butterfly)
Obtain and Use Energy
Obtain energy from environment
Anabolism: synthesis (uses energy)
Catabolism: break down (produces energy)
Metabolism= Anabolism +Catabolism-sum
total of energy production and usage
What is the “Energy “ we keep referring to?
ATP
Response to Environment
STIMULUS- anything that causes organism to
react
Response- response to stimulus
HOMEOSTASIS- regulation of an organism’s
internal environment that is suitable to survival
(ex. Sweating vs. shivering)
SCIENTIFIC METHOD
SCIENTIFIC METHOD
Common steps that scientists use to gather
information and answer questions
Start by stating a possible answer to a
question- HYPOTHESIS
Test Hypothesis with EXPERIMENT
Designing an Experiment
Have 2 groups- Control and Experimental
Control group- standard or normal (no
changes)
Experimental group- change ONE variableother wise you won’t know what is causing
change in the experimental group
Variables
Independent(manipulated)- the one scientist
changes
Dependant(responding)- outcome that scientist
measures
EX.- Grow 2 plants in soil. One receives water,
the other doesn’t. Measure growth by height
Independent variable?
Amount of water
Dependant variable?
Height
SET UP EXPERIMENT
Constants- variables that are the same for
both the control group and experimental
group
Make observations
Collect Data
2 typesQuantitative- numbers (objective)
Qualitative- observations (subjective)
Compile
Results
Form Conclusion
Follow up- make revisions
Theory-
hypothesis supported by
large body of scientific evidence.
Laws- ideas that are known to be true
(gravity)
Lab Safety
No food or gum
Goggles/gloves if required
No goofing off!
Handle specimens with care-Humanely!!
Come prepared!
