Individual
Simón Bolívar (South America; early 1800’s)
Nationalism
•
Bolívar was born in Spanish colony of Venezuela.
•
Spain’s Latin American colonies had a social structure called the encomienda
system. In it, only people born in Spain—called peninsulares—were able to reach
the top (meaning having the most power and wealth).
•
Because Bolívar was not born in Spain, he was in the creole class and his
opportunities were automatically limited (even though he was from a wealthy and
influential family.
•
Bolívar read the writings of the Enlightenment and took to heart the ideals of
equality, democracy, natural rights and the social contract theory of government.

Bolívar studied at a military school and became a military leader. He then travel to
France in the period after the French Revolution when Napoleon Bonaparte came
to power and some of the Enlightenment ideas were incorporated into French law
through the Napoleonic Code.
•
Upon returning to Venezuela, Bolívar decided to start a revolt against Spanish rule.
He then led revolts in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru (with Jose de San Martin) and the
country that got named after him, Bolivia.
•
He then was President of Gran Colombia, a new republic made up of modern-day
Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama, northern Peru, western Guyana and
northwestern Brazil.
•
Unfortunately, Gran Colombia broke apart and only lasted from 1819-1831. But
Bolívar is remembered as the Liberator for leading South American independence.
