balanced, they could keep each other under
control.

• Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr tied in the
electoral college. Jefferson was supposed to
be President and Burr V-P.

• Jefferson won, because his rival, Alexander
Hamilton, decided to throw Federalist support
behind him.
