Practice

Practice

• Pick a partner to work with.

• For the one being coached, choose an issue that you are facing in your District Action Plan. • Write this issue down.

Practice: Probing Questions • Coach’s role: Ask

probing questions

of your partner.

– To do this, the coach asks an opening question, such as, “What is the issue you are dealing with?” – After hearing the issue, the coach will try asking probing questions to better understand the issue.

Practice: Probing Questions and Pausing • Continue the conversation, and Coaches can now try

pausing

in addition to asking probing questions.

– Try this: after asking another probing question and hearing a response, pause and wait for a deeper response.

Practice: Probing Questions, Pausing, and Paraphrasing • Coaches add

paraphrasing

to asking probing questions and pausing.

– After asking a probing question and pausing, try paraphrasing what the other person said.

Practice: Probing Questions, Pausing, Paraphrasing, and Paralanguage • Now,

paralanguage

.

– Continue the conversation.

– See if you can tell where the coach used paralanguage.

Practice

• Now switch roles and practice using – Probing Questions – Pausing – Paraphrasing – Using Paralanguage
