Kitagata(japan) 2000
This apartment complex comprises four buildings, each
designed by a different female architect, and landscape
spaces designed by schwartz. For the latter, Schwartz
considered the needs of different kinds of families and
the various and distinct age groups who would need
to use the spaces. 'We created a variety of small but
age specific mini-landscapes, where everyone could be
in his or her own space while still all being together.'
Schwartz explains.

Since the site was formerly home to several rice paddies
a structural vocabulary of dykes and sunken spaces was
used to differentiate the spaces, or episodes, of the landscape.
The Willow Court is the most private space:
a sunken, flooded area of willow trees and wetland
vegetation bisected by a boardwalk. The four Seasons
Garden was intended for teenagers: four spaces enclosed
by coloured Plexiglas that evoke the seasons. And younger
children enjoy the Stone Garden, with its stepping stones
and pink boulders that double up as randomly spitting
water fountains. A wooden dance floor was requested by
older residents, while the Bamboo Garden, Cherry Forecourt
and Iris Canal provide more traditional horticultural delights.

This concept looks at the space between the buildings, places where public life is played out. It is
concerned with the spatial arrangement and a hierarchy of spaces, the material treatment of road
and pavement surfaces, the balance of hard and soft treatments, and the items placed within the
landscape; lighting, street furniture, and public art.
This Master Plan for Cork Docklands has maximized pedestrian access along the water edge, with
public quaysides on both the north and south side of the River Lee. This major new plaza and park
forms a new gateway into Cork, with new bridges over the River. In this design, Mooring will be
provided for tall ships, water taxis, rowing boatsand yachts. The floating landscapes will also
provide a wildlife refuge for resident and migrating wildlife, bringing nature back into the heart of
the city.
The concept exploits the park infrastructure set out in the Dockland Area Plans to create a series
of interlinked, green open spaces that bring light and air into the dense urban fabric of Cork
Docklands. The Kennedy Spine has been widened to reinforce the physical and visual connection
with the North Docklands and the community park in the south.
Throughout Cork Docklands there will be a variety of hard and soft landscaped spaces of different
scales at intervals along key pedestrian routes, providing an easily recognizable link to different
parts of the city centre. These spaces, such as the canal link to the District Centre, will offer the
opportunity for further innovation, and the creation of a unique public realm for Cork Docklands.

Dublin 2007
this thrilling new Urban plaza is at the heart of the redevelopment
of Dublin`s south Docks area. The daniel Libeskind - designed
Grand canal Theatre(Unfinished at time of pubilcation) wili take
up one end of the square While the other looks out over the Canal
itself, with an office block and new hotel flanking the space. the
architecture(all of it distinguished) is realized in a panoply of
styles, so the landscape design had to provide a sense of unity.
Because of what schwartz accurately describes as the cultural
celebrity setting' of the new square, a scheme was developed
featuring a central 'red carpet' that leads from the theatre out
onto the canal and vice versa. A green 'carpet' connects the new
hotel to the office development. The Red carpet is paved in a
newly developed bright-red resin-glass material, and is
completed by glowing, angled lightsticks that mimic the 'bustle'
on the real red carpet.

The green carpet has a calmer expression and offers ample
seating at varied heights on the edges of the planters. The
planters themselves are extruded polyons of the green
carpet, planted with marsh vegetation as a reminder of the
historic wetland for which this area was formerly well
known (and hated by the people who had to live there)
Some of the planters offer immaculate lawns for lingering.
Pushing out of the plaza is a water feature of randomly
stacked green marble that overflows with bubbling water.
the square is further criss-crossed by narrow granite-paved
paths that allow for movement across the space, while
providing space for activities such as markets or fairs.
Several metallic structures serve as entrances to the
stairwells leading down to the underground car park.

Location: London, UK
Client: London Borough
of Southwark
Size: 1 Hectare
During the fourteenth
century, St. Mary's
Churchyard was the site
of an old medieval
parish church, Saint
Mary of Newington. The
main structure of the
church was demolished
in 1720, leaving only the
Clock Tower as a
historical landmark. The
Church was rebuilt and
opened in March 1721.
During the 18th century,
the church was
flattened, and the site
has been an open park
ever since.
St Mary’s Churchyard, London,
UK;

In 2007, Southwark Council relandscaped St. Mary's
Churchyard with the financial assistance of the London
Development Agency as part of the Elephant and
Castle Regeneration Scheme. At the time of the
landscaping works, very little visual evidence remained
that the site had been a churchyard. The only remnants
were a small number of gravestones placed along the
boundary of Churchyard Row, the listed railings which
were extensively restored, and the clock tower
memorial stone.
The key design goals for St Mary's were to reorganise
the park while retaining its positive historic qualities,
link the park to the city, incorporate healthy existing
trees into the design, work with the historic railings,
and ultimately to make the park a safe, accessible, and
desirable place for the community. These goals are
achieved by incorporating park access, safety features,
and activity into the design.
While working on the site construction, workmen
came across a number of old vaults and burial plots.
These were carefully recorded by an archaeologist and
left undisturbed. Today the site remains a consecrated
ground and continues to be an open space for the use
and enjoyment of children and the greater public. The
site has won the British Association of Landscape
Industries Award for Regeneration
