PEER Intensive
Goals
The overarching goal of Intensive 2002 is to
provide an opportunity for middle school science
teachers, to learn about this exciting program
and to explore the electronic curriculum
resources that are currently being developed.
Moreover, teachers will engage in intensive,
hands-on sessions that provide professional
development in technology integration and
environmental and health science topics.
Special thanks to Shawn Brock and other teachers who fieldtested curricula modules with their students during the 20012002 school year!

water quality evaluation,
scientific method, and
use of technology in the
classroom were
conducted in different
locations in Texas. This
provided development
opportunities for rural

The organizing idea is to identify and
develop environmental health themes that
can be placed in an integrated middle
school curricula for Mathematics, English,
Social Studies and Science
Personal Lifestyles, Industrial Practices,
Farming Practices, and Community and
Government Policies themes will enable
activities such as: analyzing news items,

presenting statistical summaries, developing
case histories in history, geography etc.
We will have
Integration
Project
presentations
at lunch time.

Organ Systems Module
Focuses on five main
classes of functions that a
body must perform.
Rather than just naming
organs of the body and
what they do, we present a
perspective on the body
as a coordinated group of
systems
Module Units:
Bodily Defenses
Digestion
Detoxication
Gas Exchange
Coordination & Control
Toxic or Not? Module
Students
Complete lessons on different
toxin sources such as bacteria,
nutrition, and air quality
Play a mystery game to find
what toxic substance has made
patients sick, and its sources

Every Breath You Take
More Than Skin Deep
You Are What You Eat
Properties of Hazards Module
Focuses on different
types of hazards that we
can get exposed to in our
day to day life.
It includes their properties,
source, route of exposure
and the adverse health
effects that they produce.
