Information about the National
Standards for Business Education
• Published every 5 to 6 years
• Standards are based on philosophy that
business education competencies are
essential for all students.
• An education for and about business
offers students the opportunity to master
the fundamental knowledge and skills
needed to succeed in business and in life.
National Standards Recommend
At a completion of their secondary or
postsecondary preparation, students should be
able to:
 Function as economically literate citizens
 Understand how businesses operate
 Demonstrate interpersonal, team, and
leadership skills.
National Standards four-tier
approach
• Elementary grades- business educators
partner with elementary teachers to
integrate technology into the curriculum.
• Junior high/Middle school- business
educators introduce students to concepts
of basic business, entrepreneurship, and
personal finance.
National Standards four-tier
approach (cont.)
• Secondary level- business educators “facilitate
•
learning in a student-centered environment”
Postsecondary level- business educators offer
certificate or degree programs that enable
students to develop “advanced technological
skills, refine their understanding of economic
principles and systems, and enhance their
proficiency in communication, critical thinking,
mgt., personal finance, and problem solving.”

Adding Value to Business Education

programs
Emerging Role of the Business
Educator
Business Educators need to create an environment
where students learn to think and embrace
challenges of societal and technological change.
Business Educators will be expected to facilitate
experiences that allow students to become
independent learners, as well as team members
who are accountable for their own knowledge
and performance.
Enrollment Trends
• Business Ed. Courses and programs should
•
•
•
benefit from the fact that number of students in
grades 9-12 is high.
The enrollment is projected to remain high
through the year 2010.
More male students are enrolling in computerrelated business courses.
Improvements in technology, and a growing
since that students need some employment skills
have increased the interest in business courses.
Enrollment Trends (cont.)
• Business leaders want educators to
provide students with knowledge and
activities necessary for them to develop
essential workplace skills.
• Business teachers need to have close
contact with employers in the
communities.
Teacher Shortage
• Shortage exists in some areas of the U.S.,
and the shortage is expected to become
more widespread.
• Up to 50% of Business Teachers that were
in the classroom in 2000 are expected to
retire or leave the profession within the
next 5-10 years.
• Business Ed. Programs have also declined.
Alternative Preparation and
Certification
• Allows people to teach when they are
perceived to have content knowledge and
related work experience.
Computer Technology
• Allows Business Ed. Teachers to collaborate with
•
•
•
elementary teachers.
Business educators need to promote
keyboarding in ways that add value to k-12
curriculum.
Evidence indicates that teaching keyboarding
improves language arts skills and spelling.
Technology is very powerful and promises to
improve productivity and the quality of life in the
United States as well as other parts of the world.
Knowledge Management
• Provides mutual benefit to schools and
•
•
businesses.
Concept of knowledge management is record
documentation and unrecorded information that
exists through the knowledge and experiences
of the employees of an organization.
Knowledge management requires in-depth
thinking about knowledge, the form it takes, the
processes used to create it, and its financial
value to the organization.
Globalization of the Economy
• Business educators can promote
understanding and appreciation of other
countries and their people, culture,
economic systems, languages, religions,
customs, and human rights records by
integrating cross-cultural education into
the K-12 curriculum early and frequently.
School Reform
• Career and technical programs, including
business ed. are being affected by the
movement.
• Standardized Testing
The Integrated Curriculum
• Business educators must be proactive in linking
•
•
the business curriculum to the academic
standards for it to be accepted by the parents,
administrators, teachers, and students.
Business educators must identify how content
areas meet or exceed the academic standards
being required for graduation.
Business educators must market the curriculum
effectively to help ensure its adoption.
Assessment, Accountability, and
Academic Standards
• The business education curriculum is not
•
included in most mandatory testing throughout
the country, it is nonetheless affected by
academic assessments.
Business educators must develop procedures
and standards that demonstrate that many of
the core competencies required for high school
graduation can be taught in business education
courses.
Summary
After reviewing the current trends in
business education and learning about the
National Standards of Business Education,
you should know what is expected from
you as a Business educator whenever you
get your own classroom.
