UCO Background & Info
P&E Background & Info
UCO Background
• 1890 – Territorial Normal School Created
– Normal meant to train teachers
•
•
•
•
1891 – first classes met
1892 – Construction of Old North began
1893 – Classes start meeting in Old North
1907 - November 16 – Oklahoma Becomes
46th state “place to go to strike it rich”
(discovery of oil resources)
UCO Background
• 1919 – Name change to Central State
Teacher’s College – expanded to offer four
year degrees.
• 1939 – Name change to Central State
College – also could offer B.A. and B.S.
• 1941 – Became part of System overseen by
Oklahoma Regents for Higher Ed. (still is)
UCO Background
• ???? - Name change to Central State University
(offered some Master’s Degrees)
• 1991 – Name change to University of Central
Oklahoma
• 3rd largest university in the state (~ 15,000)
• Five Colleges - CAMD, CBA, COE, COLA, CMS
• Still train large number of future teachers
• Now educate students in very diverse and unique
areas
– Funeral Service, Forensic Science, and
Biomedical Engineering (all in CMS)
OKLAHOMA STATE
REGENTS FOR HIGHER
EDUCATION (OSRHE)
• Subdivisions
– BOR for the Oklahoma A&M Colleges
• Connors State, Langston, NEO, Panhandle
State, all OSU campuses
– BOR of Oklahoma Colleges
• UCO, NSU, ECU, SWOSU, NWOSU, SEOSU
– BOR of University of Oklahoma
• All campuses (Cameron Univ., Med. School)

Dept. of Physics and Engineering
• Originally part of Physical Science Dept. (Physics
and Chemistry)
• Standalone Physics Dept. in 1950’s (Dr. Marks)
• 1960s – mid 1970’s build up (physics jobs abound)
• 1980’s – physics majors, but take engineering
science courses
• Late 1980’s – Master’s Program
• 1990’s – More Engineering –
• 2000 Engr. Phys. // 2001 BME // 2002 M.S. in EP
• EP (three options) –
– EP – Engineering Physics (Standard)
– EPS – Engineering Physics Sciences
– EP – Engineering Physics Technology
