Reading Specialist: Laurie Rose
Students are categorized into
three different groups of
readers:
 Basic (below grade level)
 Proficient (on grade level)
 Advanced (above grade level)
Assessments to determine
reading ability:
 MSAs
 MAP-R
 English Formative/Summative Assessments
**Based on these assessments students are
recommended for classes in 7th and 8th grade.
Options for Proficient and
Advanced Readers
 Foreign Language—French or Spanish
 Honors Classes—MCPS curriculum
taught with advanced components
Criteria for Foreign Language
 Proficient or Advanced score on MSA
 On or above level score on MAP-R
 Teacher recommendation
 Student Motivation

Who takes Reading?
 7th and 8th graders who need
assistance in improving their reading
ability.
 There are three options for reading
classes:
Intensive Reading Needs (IRN)
Reading 7 (7th grade)
READ 180 (7th & 8th grade)
What are the differences
between the classes?
 IRN: small group instruction focusing on
decoding needs and goals, as well as
fluency and comprehension.
 Reading 7: MCPS Reading 7 curriculum
 READ 180: an intense reading
intervention program designed by
Scholastic for middle and high school
students
What factors contribute to
Reading placement?
7th Grade criteria:
 MSA scores
*Basic on 5th grade MSA
 MAP-R Scores (Measures of Academic
Progress-Reading)
*Below grade level on 6th grade winter MAP-R
 Teacher Recommendation
