GENERAL SAFETY
RULES
Engineering Lab
Landstown High School
Safety Dance
1.
TEACHER APPROVAL MUST BE
OBTAINED BEFORE USING ANY
EQUIPMENT
Usually students will get blanket approval when
they “safety up” as a class. This rule is most
important during activity and after school.
2. ALWAYS WEAR EYE
PROTECTION
When any machine
is on in the shop
EVERYONE will
wear their safety
glasses or goggles.
This is a Virginia
State Law.
3. TAKE CARE OF
LOOSE CLOTHING
-SHIRT TAILS TUCKED IN
-LONG SLEEVES UP
-JACKETS & SWEATSHIRTS
OFF
Yes, we will all tuck in our shirts
and look like geeks together!
It’s better to be safe than
fashionable. 
4. REMOVE LOOSE JEWELRY
This includes watches, dangling earrings,
bracelets of any sort and necklaces.
See, even Mr. T
agrees this is a
good idea!
5. TIE BACK LONG HAIR
If your hair extends past your
shoulders or hangs in your eyes you
are going to tie it back. Guys too.
6.
DO NOT USE ANY EQUIPMENT UNLESS
YOU KNOW HOW IT WORKS. ASK YOUR
TEACHER FOR HELP IF YOU ARE IN DOUBT
ON HOW TO USE ANY EQUIPMENT
Everyone will do a safety unit specific to each machine and see
demos on the use of each machine before they cut or drill. If you
miss one of these or your still not sure please, please ask for help.
7. MOST ACCIDENTS
ARE CAUSED BY PEOPLE
BEING CARELESS...
SO REMEMBER THE
ABC's OF SAFETY,
ALWAYS BE CAREFUL.
8. NO FOOLING AROUND
Horseplay of any kind is strictly prohibited
for obvious reasons.
9. SELECT THE PROPER
EQUIPMENT FOR THE JOB
10. Never Assume Anything,
Always check everything yourself.
11. ALL ADJUSTMENTS TO EQUIPMENT
AND SAFETY GUARDS MUST BE MADE
BEFORE THE EQUIPMENT IS TURNED ON
12. GIVE THE EQUPMENT YOUR FULL
ATTENTION. CONCENTRATE,
DO NOT TALK OR LOOK AWAY WHILE
OPERATING EQUIPMENT
13. DO NOT DISTRACT THE PERSON
OPERATING THE EQUIPMENT
This is the rule that is most often broken in the lab.
You will go to the back of the line if you break this rule.
14. ALWAYS TURN
EQUIPMENT OFF WHEN
YOU ARE FINISHED AND
BE SURE IT HAS COME TO
A COMPLETE STOP
BEFORE YOU
WALK AWAY.
15. IF ANYTHING BREAKS OR APPEARS
IMPROPER TELL YOUR TEACHER.
Even if you broke the
machine, most of the
time it was an
accident & your
teacher won’t be
upset. A broken
machine is much
more dangerous
than an intact one.
16. DO NOT CROWD AROUND
EQUIPMENT - OBSERVE WORK ZONE
WHICH IS THE AREA THAT HAS BEEN
MARKED ON THE FLOOR AROUND A
PIECE OF EQUIPMENT
17. ANYTIME THE TEACHER NEEDS TO
LEAVE THE LAB,
ALL EQUIPMENT MUST BE TURNED OFF
=
18. A CLEAN LAB IS A SAFE LAB, CLEAN
UP AFTER YOURSELF AND RETURN ALL
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT TO THEIR
PROPER PLACE.
19. YOUR BEST FRIEND IS COMMON SENSE
- USE YOUR COMMON SENSE WHEN
WORKING IN THE LAB
20. REPORT ALL INJURIES TO
YOUR TEACHER IMMEDIATELY
