Lab Safety Chemical Safety Hygiene Plan
Rules
• Use the lab only when directed by the
teacher.
• Follow instructions (both written and oral).
If you don’t understand something…ASK
FIRST!!!
• Do not touch anything until instructed to do
so.
• Do not eat, drink beverages or chew gum
in lab.
• Long hair must be tied back.
• No loose clothing, open toed shoes or
dangling jewelry.
• Wear eye protection, gloves & aprons as
instructed (Personal Protective
Equipment…PPE)
• No horseplay, jokes or pranks are allowed.
You must exhibit responsible behavior.
• You are responsible for cleaning up your
station or work area.
• Stay at your assigned station. Do not
wander around the room.
• Do not taste anything!

Material Safety Data Sheet
• Sheets for each substance in the lab will
be in the notebook.

Fire extinguishers have about 15 seconds
of powder…if this doesn’t work…evacuate!
Know the location of the:
– ABC Fire extinguisher (by the door) 601
– Blanket room 619
– Eye wash station (next room…less than 10 second
walk away) room 602
– Shower (chemistry room) 619
– Right to Know room 605
– MSDS notebook room 605
– First aid kit room 601
– Elec equip call Mr. Green
– Emergency phone - your pocket!

Know where alarms and fire extinguishers are located.
Fire Drill: Left, Left, Left…find me at the fence and check in!
Accidents
• Notify teacher of any accident, injury or
spills.
• Do not handle broken glass…teacher will
clean it up.
Know where to go in the event of
an accident…take action!!!
Contract
• Student laboratory safety contracts must
be signed by student and parent and
returned before you can participate in labs.
• No exceptions.
• SIGN & RETURN THIS CONTRACT
TOMORROW!
Questions?
• Will we lose points for violations?
– You betcha! You’ll get a zero for the lab for:
• Horseplay, wandering, tasting, etc.
• When can we make up labs when we’re
absent?
– Yes. You must be prepared to make up any
lab activity that you miss on the Tuesday
following your return. Mark your calendar!
