Emotion intelligence
Cognitive appraisal
• the recognition that people realize their own
emotions. Literally cognitive appraisal is to
evaluate our cognitions. Concerning to
emotional spin cycle, it is to recognize what
emotions people have. When I relate this with
self-enhancing behavior which is positive blue
and acting out, we have choices either evaluate
our emotions more positively or negatively. It is
more desirable to evaluate positively on our
emotions because it can lead self-enhancing
behavior.
Cognitive scripts (schemas)
• the tendency to develop our emotions. As we evaluate
our emotions, it would induce other emotions to
rise. Some people have positive cognitive schemas for
the emotions that once one positive emotions take place,
other positive emotions come out. For example, if
someone was happy to go to a concert that the person
really wanted. Then the person might feel lucky to be
there and suddenly he or she feels glad that his or her
car is working all right. In the other hands, some one
also can develop positive cognitive schemas for the one
negative feelings so that she or he can forget that
emotion and feel happy about other things. This
cognitive scripts also work for the negative scenarios.
Behavioral routines
• tendencies that people react on the certain
emotions. For example, some people cry
if they feel sad or somepeople throw
everything away and break everything if
they are angry. These are typical
behavioral routines. This is acting out part
in the four options and the two bridges
diagram so that people can do supportive
and constructive behavior.
Emotion intelligence
• the ability to control emotions and act wisely. More
specifically, emotionally intelligent people knows their
emotions more precisely. That is in other words, they
have better ability of cognitive appraisal. They not only
evaluate their emotions accurately but also they find their
emotions more quickly. Emotionally intelligent people
have positive cognitive schemas so that they change
their mood from the bad to the good. They also have
more positive behavioral routines so that they don't hurt
anyone if they get upset. Therefore we can say that
emotional intelligence is not only cognitive intelligence
but also behavioral too. In the cognitive parts of
emotional intelligence include cognitive appraisal and
cognitive schemas. In the behavioral part of the
emotional intelligence includes behavioral routines.

<A>"cognitive appraisal" in relation
to self-enhancing behavior
• Motivation in Learning
–
Learning is a self-enhancing behavior. To
learn something effectively, we need to
motivate ourselves. Many educators have
tried to find ways of effective
teaching. Motivation is a crucial part of this
effective learning. In the other hands,
motivation is thinking part of our three fold
self. Therefore, the spin cycle is relevant to
this motivation of learning. Here is the web
site explaining how to motivate the students.
<A>"cognitive appraisal" in relation
to self-enhancing behavior
• Stress Management Skills
–
When our emotion spins, stress takes bad
role that induces negative thinking. As a
certain event people experience, stressed
people would label the emotion more
negatively and cynically. Therefore, this
stress management is necessary for
controlling the emotion. If we have less
stress, it is less likely to recognize the emotion
negatively.
<A>"cognitive appraisal" in relation
to self-enhancing behavior
• Time management and bridges
–
Good time management or planning can produce a
self-enhancing behavior. If we don't do well in time
management, we get stressed and start to interpret
everything negatively. It is why some free-lancers
don't do the good job in time-management tend to be
cynical which is the opposite of self-enhancing
behavior. Although some people are good at time
management, it doesn't guarantee the self-enhancing
behavior. However, it shifts the evaluation of the
emotion more positively and it has potential to induce
self-enhancing behavior. This article shows how to
manage and plan the time well.
<A>"cognitive appraisal" in relation
to self-enhancing behavior
• Self Talk
–
Self-talk will lead to self-enhancing behavior. This is
related with thinking part of the spin cycle. It is also
related with cognitive scripts because self talk is a
way of forming schemas but it has close relationship
with cognitive appraisal because it induces more
positive evaluation of the emotion. For example, if
one person practiced the self talk and the similar
incidence happened. That person can recognize his
or her own emotion and lead it to the positive way and
it will eventually makes a self-enhancing behavior.
<A>"cognitive appraisal" in relation
to self-enhancing behavior
• Regression Therapy
–
Past life therapy will release the energy of
the trauma. It is like changing the cognitive
appraisal once it formed firmly. By going back
to the past with thinking part of the spin cycle,
people who got the PTSD could rename their
emotion from traumatic to the neutral or
somewhat arousing not that negatively. This
process will eventually lead to a selfenhancing behavior such as planning the
future rather than just hanging onto the past.
<B> "cognitive scripts" or schemas
in relation to motivation or affect
• Matters of the Mind
–
We need to activate ourselves with
motivation. Then we can achieve certain
goals. Motivation is a positive schema in our
mind. In our emotional spin cycle, motivation is a
force to the positive acting out. It originally starts from
the affect then makes certain constructive
behavior. There is certain good condition in
motivation as if good weather is better for the
golf. This web page introduced how to make good
conditions for having good motivation.
<B> "cognitive scripts" or schemas
in relation to motivation or affect
• Self Actualization
– We have motivation because we want to
achieve something or we need
something. This article showed what kinds of
needs human beings have. Needs in other
hands mean we don't have or fulfill that yet. It
will bring out certain emotions. Usually, it
could be negative affects. Therefore, it is
necessary to understand our needs in
developing emotions which is cognitive
schemas.
<B> "cognitive scripts" or schemas
in relation to motivation or affect
• Hypnosis
– Our subconscious mind learns best by
"positive repetition while you're relaxed". It
could be achieved by hypnosis. This was
hypnosis advertising page but this showed the
evidence that mind affects cognition. It is a
basic rule in our spin cycle because it says
affects affect thinking and it induces
behaviors.
<B> "cognitive scripts" or schemas
in relation to motivation or affect
• Subconscious
–
Here in this article, the author talks about the
subconscious. It may be a program that we run when
certain emotions arousing. The author thought of
subconscious as a source that we could have our
emotion. Our emotional spin cycle model talks about
how we change them but not why we have them and
why we have emotional schemas. This article is not
supported by scientific evidence. If we could find
some scientific evidence, it will solidify our emotional
spin cycle theory.
<B> "cognitive scripts" or schemas
in relation to motivation or affect
• Maintaining Good Schemas
–
If our emotions just spin around without
having any goals, it wouldn't give that much
meaning. We need to set certain goals for the
future and work for it. This article showed
how to maintain the passion for achieving
goals. This is related with the skills of how to
maintain good schemas.
<C> "behavioral routines" in relation
to socialization or enculturation
• Socialization
– I examined the meaning of socialization
because I am looking the behavioral routines
in relation to socialization or
enculturation. The point that the standards of
behavior from the web showed the difficulty of
having good behavioral routines. Having
positive emotional spin cycle is not automatic
from the side of socialization.
<C> "behavioral routines" in relation
to socialization or enculturation
• Political Science
– Political activities are behaviors as well as
thinking part of our three fold self. The author
thought we could manipulate the behaviors by
neuroscientific methods. The goal of politics
is to make our society better and sustain the
power more and longer. It was interesting to
apply some practical methods on politics from
our emotions.
<C> "behavioral routines" in relation
to socialization or enculturation
• Etiquette
– In our culture, we have etiquettes. If
someone doesn’t abide by etiquettes, we feel
offended or uncomfortable. Therefore,
etiquettes are some general social norm to
respect one another and for not hurting some
other’ people’s emotion. This is consideration
or prevention technique of other’s emotional
spin cycle from positive to negative.
<C> "behavioral routines" in relation
to socialization or enculturation
• Enculturation
– This article was about thinking enculturation in
teaching environment. Thinking is followed by
affect in our emotional spin cycle. Once we
form better thinking enculturation, we can
learn better and it will lead to our behavioral
practices. Therefore, this thinking
enculturation is to do with our emotional spin
cycle.
<C> "behavioral routines" in relation
to socialization or enculturation
• Change of Our Culture
– Our protocol of behavioral routines would change all
the time although the degree of change could be very
slight. This article examined how those changes
would occur. Our emotional spin cycle is keep
changing that is why we call it spin cycle. Cycle
means it sometimes come back. However, time has
passed so that the emotion could be different
although people would name the emotions the same
way. More specifically we can't have exactly the
same emotion from yesterday to today for the same
incidence. Time has passed and we gained more
experiences. This will make difference.
