A gerund is a verb form ending in –ing that is
used as a noun.
It may be used by itself or with other words in
a gerund phrase.

EXAMPLE- Singing is fun.

Singing is fun.

This is the gerund in the sentence.

EXAMPLE- Singing with a friend is fun.


Singing with a friend is fun.
This is the gerund phrase.

Gerund phrases can be used in four ways

Subject
 Talking on the phone occupies a good deal of time.

Direct Object
 The lady finally stopped smoking cigarettes.

Predicate Noun/Subjective Complement
 My favorite thing to do is running in a race.

Object of a Preposition
 I have not thought of doing my homework.
