A gerund is a verb form ending in –ing that is
used as a noun.
It may be used by itself or with other words in
a gerund phrase.
EXAMPLE- Singing is fun.
Singing is fun.
This is the gerund in the sentence.
EXAMPLE- Singing with a friend is fun.
Singing with a friend is fun.
This is the gerund phrase.
Gerund phrases can be used in four ways
Subject
Talking on the phone occupies a good deal of time.
Direct Object
The lady finally stopped smoking cigarettes.
Predicate Noun/Subjective Complement
My favorite thing to do is running in a race.
Object of a Preposition
I have not thought of doing my homework.
