Gerund Phrases
Get out a sheet of paper and write Gerund
Phrases at the top. Then, copy this information:
• A gerund is an “ing” verb that is used as a noun
–
EX: My grandfather likes strolling.
For each of the sentences below, write the gerund that
is acting as a noun.
(You do NOT have the write the sentence).
1. Eating is something I enjoy.
2. Tony gives baking his best effort.
3. Yesterday I was going to do some thinking.
4. Rachel’s favorite pastime is painting.
5. My hobby, writing, is creating a lot of extra work for
me.
Copy these notes:
A gerund phrase = a gerund + complements and
modifiers
EX: Dancing the tango is not as easy as it looks.
For each of the sentences below, write the gerund
phrase (You do NOT have the write the sentence).
1. Capturing territory was a challenging experience.
2. The famous Spaniard enjoyed discovering and
exploring new places.
3. Cortes was adept at gaining the trust of others.
4. Cortes sailed back to Mexico in 1530 and began
building his palace and exploring the Pacific region.
5. Fred Astaire’s marvelous dancing will always be
considered superb.
Copy these notes:
The only time you need a comma with a gerund phrase
is if it is an appositive.
For each of the sentences below, decide whether or not
a comma is needed. If so, write the word BEFORE the
comma. (You do NOT have the write the sentence).
1. Reading a book always puts me to sleep at night.
2. What keeps me up all night is watching TV.
3. My least favorite activity ironing my clothes makes
me late every morning.
4. Every morning I spend at least 10 minutes making
my lunch.
