Gerunds

A type of verbal (word formed from verb)

Ends in –ing and is used as a noun

Examples:

Swimming exercises every major muscle.

Before running, I like to do some stretches.
For my step-by-step friends:
“How to find the participial phrase”:
1.
Find and eliminate the main verb of the sentence so you don’t confuse
that as a verbal. **do not cross out prepositional phrases**
2.
Find the participle. (check: does it describe a noun? Can I use it in a
sentence as a verb?)
3.
Look for what goes with the participle:

9 times out of 10, it is followed by a prepositional phrase.


The 1 time out of 10 is the exception… followed by an adverb, etc.

4.
Ex.: The dog, searching for food, roamed the neighborhood.
Ex: The horse, walking slowly, approached the trainer.
Now you’ve found it! To check to see what it modifies, ask yourself,
“Which noun is this phrase giving me more information about?”
