Technical description of the
project activity
• The project’s purpose : it is the
generation of electrical energy. The
project would have a total investment
cost (excluding customs and duties) of
approximately € 28.6 to 29.8 million,
depending on foundation conditions.
Construction would take about two
and a half years (30 months).

Technical description of the
project activity (contd.)
• The project involves construction of a
power plant within the river channel
immediately downstream of the
existing Damietta Barrage
• The installed capacity would be 13.0
MW, with actual hydropower
generation rising from 81 GWh in 2010
to 84 GWh in 2017, as river flows
increase.

Technical description of the
project activity (contd.)
• The power generated would be
supplied to the local grid by a 66 kV
double circuit overhead transmission
line running for about 450 m to a new
66 kV substation north of the WRC
campus, and from there by a new 66
kV overhead line for some 300 m to an
existing overhead 66 kV transmission
line.

Technical description of the
project activity (contd.)
• The construction time for the project is
about 2.5 years, and the earliest year of
construction is expected to be 2005. The
earliest year of commissioning and
operation of the project will be 2007.
• The environmental assessment carried our
during the study considers that the project is
regarded as addition to the existing barrage
and its head pond, and no re-location of
people is involved.

How GHGs are reduced :
• Applying the methodology described
in section B.2, the project will generate
an annual reduction of 47,058 tCO2
and a total reduction of 988,218 tCO2
over 21 years.

Justification of Baseline Scenario
• The project type is not a common
practice.
• The project type lacks priority within
the planning scheme of the country.
• Perceived technology risk.

The outline of the method to calculate the ERs is as follows:
Determination of baseline emission rate (as per section B3)
(tCO2/MWh)
Monitoring generation output from the Project
(MWh)
Calculation of ERs generated by the Project using the formula:
Periodic annual electricity dispatched to the grid X baseline emission rate for this period
(tCO2)

Environmental impacts
• The environmental assessment has
concentrated on identifying environmental
and social factors which might affect the
project layout, design and cost.
• A limited consultation process was carried
out, appropriate to the level of detail of the
study. Persons and organizations consulted
are listed in the main documents.
• The screening process carried out in this IEE
has not identified any significant negative
environmental impacts likely to be caused
by the project.

Stakeholders comments
• There have been consultations with the
farmers downstream from the irrigation
district who use the water stored in the
Barrage. There have also been consultations
with affected landowners along the route of
the transmission line.
• Most of the comments appreciate and
welcome the project.
