Treaties: Overview
Agreements negotiated between two or more nations
Between 1763-1921 over 50 separate treaties were
signed between the Crown & Aboriginal groups
Gradual surrender of Native rights in return for reserves,
money, food, medicine, & other necessities
Each treaty contained different clauses which described
what the aboriginal group(s) in a particular area would
actually receive

Goals of Aboriginal negotiators:
Ensure physical survival of native groups.
Keep peaceful relations with the Can. Govt.
Preserve distinctive aboriginal traditions.

To acquire legal title to the land for development
To peacefully settle the west
To avoid costly wars with the aboriginals
