U.S. NATIONAL CENTER FOR
ENGINEERING STRONG MOTION DATA
(NCESMD)
Hamid Haddadi, Anthony Shakal and Moh Huang
California Geological Survey
and
Woody Savage and Chris Stephens
US Geological Survey
National Center for Engineering
Strong Motion Data
• Single unified facility includes functions of receiving
data from field stations, processing data, rapidly
releasing data via the web site, and archiving data
• Goal: Provide timely, quality-controlled, and easily
accessible data for domestic and foreign earthquakes
of engineering interest
NCESMD a cooperative center …
• Established by the USGS and CGS to integrate strong
ground motion record access
• Built on the Engineering Data Center of the
California Integrated Seismic Network (CISN)
• Will continue to serve the California region while
expanding to serve the other ANSS regions of USGS
NCESMD Web Site
• Web site is dynamic - all web pages are generated onthe-fly, upon user need/request
• Data and information are retrieved from a database in
real time when users open web pages
• Provides basic station information
 type of station (ground response or structure)
 photo showing station setting
 site conditions (surface geology, Vs30)
 list of records obtained
• At
www.strongmotioncenter.org

SUMMARY
• NCESMD: A unified strong-motion data center for
engineering applications
• A Center Management Group manages the NCESMD with
input from an external Advisory Committee
• Products will be generated by both CGS and USGS facilities.
• Each ANSS region is responsible for and credited for the data
recorded by its regional network.
• Incorporate the COSMOS VDC – transition is just beginning
• Database-driven site with dynamic pages and a new map
feature that facilitate the use of strong-motion data
• Co-hosted by CGS and USGS at:
