3D Geological Mapping (Modelling) in GSOS worldwide & the BGS National Geological Model of the UK. Steve Mathers, British Geological Survey Outcome from Portland 09 workshop • Illinois State-BGS publication summarising the state of geological modelling -3D mapping in GSO’s worldwide (mainly those at Portland) • 6 federal – national surveys and many stateprovincial surveys contributed • Profiles of modelling in these surveys plus uncertainty, property modelling, review of available softwares and delivery mechanisms • Its early days still with all this, gives advice for newcomers Available as *.pdf Hard copies Thanks to Dick(y) and Cheryl at ISGS for hard work on production and copy editing from co-editors and contributors 39 authors from 14 entities The 3-D modeling and visualization software programs used by the USGS (Jacobsen et al.). Applications • • • • • • • • • Water Waste management & contamination Hydrocarbon resources and CCS Land use planning, linear routes Civil Engineering Archaeology Minerals Geohazards Research Education and Outreach Many Framework models (3D maps) are fit for any purpose Conclusions • • • • • • • Benefit from shared experience of use and evaluation of software and methodologies and workflows for use in GSOs Comparison of data management and storage, linkage to native data Share experience of model use and clients and effective means of delivery Encourage more model publication on the web Maintain the momentum of the established network (today etc) Discuss future interoperability and standards to enable exchange, trans boundary fusion etc. Move towards 3 Geology? (long term aim need to the models first) Suggestion • Field guide to modelling systems? What to use where when at what resolution with what sorts of data to give what sorts of outputs BGS National Geological Model Existing - legacy models 1995-2010 A jumble of lego and duplo bricks (not voxelated though) We need the instructions to build the castle Contour maps Subcrop maps And in addition Regional geophysical compilations Sections (drawn to scale) Seismic lines (depth converted) Edinburgh Belfast SW England – Wales Regional sections Crustal Scale Model GSI-GSNI-BGS UK 3D Bedrock model • Initial build was for the EA (England & Wales) • Down to 2-3Km at Group level (plus) • Use for national and regional assessments for Groundwater, Radwaste storage, Geothermal, CCS… • Outreach (radwaste Cumbria) • Geoscience Education (hope for free download) • Tectonic Evolution & Structure Progress •UK3D almost completed for Wales and good progress in Scotland, stratigraphic checking underway •Attribution-Parameterization team set up Parameterisation •Aquifer type and flow style •Engineering Props •Geohazards •Mineral potential •Hydrocarbon importance EA Aquifer classification of initial fence diagram Detailed fence diagram for SE England can be calculated in GSI3D • Calculated Volumes down to Lower Cretaceous including Grey and White Chalk aquifers Thames Basin hydro modelling Multi-scaled pilots London and Moray Nesting stratigraphies, compromises will be necessary Easiest to do for Stratified rocks – stratigraphers permitting Deconstruction to Geological Object Store then available for editing and reconstruction into new generation models
