A project designed to help students learn about Georgia animals
INTRODUCTION
Congratulations! You just landed a job interview to be an anchor
at the best television station in Atlanta! The station just got word
that there are some wild animals on the loose around Georgia
that must be captured immediately. These animals are in grave
danger until they have all been found...
This is an important job, and since your specialty is reporting on
animals, the boss came straight to you to help find the animals.
But, you have a small problem: you don’t know much about
Georgia animals yet because you just moved here from another
state. You want to impress the boss so you can get the job, so
you’ll have to do some research before you can find the animals.
THE TASK
First, you need to do some research so you are an expert on your missing
animal.
Then, you need to prepare a 1-minute newscast that will be videotaped to
describe the animal to your audience. This is the only way you will be able to
find it! The people who watch TV will be on the lookout once you tell them.
Remember, some of the people who watch your TV station have never seen
your animal. As crazy as that sounds, you will be in charge of using very
descriptive language to help your audience understand:
• APPEARANCE
• HABITAT
• DIET
• PREDATORS
• OTHER USEFUL INFO

THE PROCESS
Researching Your Animal
1.
You will be assigned to a 2 person reporting team. This will include the cameraman
and the reporter.
2.
You will need to decide who will be the reporter and who will be the cameraman.
3.
You will research one of the animals listed below:
• Red Fox • Squirrel
• Rattlesnake
• Coyote
• Raccoon • Great Horned Owl
• Armadillo • Opossum • Loggerhead Turtle
• Black Bear
• Beaver
• White-Tailed
Deer

Find the blank note-taking sheet in your packet that has questions
about your animal and spaces to answer the questions.
5.
Remember to take notes IN YOUR OWN WORDS, paraphrasing and
using bullet points.
6.
Start with the first website listed by the animal, and see how many questions you can
answer.
7.
Move to the next website once you have answered all the questions you can.
Continue until your time is up.
CREATING YOUR REPORT
8. Remember, descriptive language is super-important! Your viewers really need to find these
animals.
9. This is the order you should follow when giving your news report:
Part 1:
Introduce yourself and what animal you are trying to find.
Part 2:
Describe how the animal looks with as much detail as you can.
Part 3:
Tell the viewer where the animal lives, what its home looks like, what the animal eats,
and what its predators are.
Part 4:
Explain why the viewers need to find the animal (use your imagination!).
Part 5:
Tell the viewers who to contact if they find the animal (you can make this up).

(mountains, marsh/swamp, coast, Piedmont, Atlantic
Ocean) and the organisms that live there.
c. Identify features of animals that allow them to live
and thrive in different regions of Georgia.
