The terms business continuity and disaster
recovery are often used interchangeably:
• Business Continuity (BC)
-is the ability to maintain acceptable operational
capability during and after a disaster
• Disaster Recovery (DR)
-is the response to a disaster that has degraded
operational capability below an acceptable level

Business Impact Analysis (BIA)


is the list of concerns a manager has to consider when
budgeting for DR/BC.
Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP)


describes how an organization is to deal with potential
disasters.
Precautions to minimize the affects of disasters

Cold Site




Shared by multiple companies
Data is not real-time
Less expensive
Split Site

Company’s IT Dept is in two different locations. If
someone happens to site #1 the site #2 takes over

Warm Site



Has equipment, software and other necessities ready to go
in case it is needed.
Equipment is off but can be brought up quickly
Hot Site
Duplicate of current computer center
 Data transferred at all times, or very frequent intervals
 At the very least all critical servers are duplicated
 Location has desks, phones, operational supplies
 This solution is very expensive


Consider your threat Risk (fire, flood, tornados,
hurricanes, power outages or terrorism)
Flood or hurricane risks - choose different region
 Tornados or fires-can chose closer location
 Power outages -can chose different region, look for
different power grid





If your Recovery Time Objective is hours instead of
days, pick a hot site
If your Recovery Time Objectives are a couple of
days then a cold site may be in order
At what point to you want to recover from?
The quicker you need the DR site working the more
