CHURCH GOSPEL AND SERMON ETIQUETTE
It is disrespectful to arrive late for Liturgy and walk to a front pew
while our clergy are reading the Gospel or delivering their sermons. It
is also distracting to others who are attempting to concentrate on the
message. If you must enter Liturgy late, you are kindly asked to take a
seat at the very back until the Gospel or sermon are completed.

EPISTLE Hebrews 6:13-20
B
rethren, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he
swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having
patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their
disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of
the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two
unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge
might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast
anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a
forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
GOSPEL Mark 9:17-31
A
t that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he
has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his
teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he
answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with
you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately
it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus
asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast
him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and
help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw
that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf
spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is
dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the
house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And he said to them, "This
kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." They went on from there and passed
through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to
them, "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he
is killed, after three days he will rise."
HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION)

Resurrectional Apolytikion
When the women Disciples of the Lord had
learned from the Angel the joyful message of
the Resurrection and had rejected the ancestral
decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ
God has risen, granting His great mercy to the
world.
For the Devout Man
With the rivers of your tears you made the barren desert bloom; and with your sighs from
deep within, you made your labors bear their
fruits a hundredfold; and you became a star,
illuminating the world by your miracles, O
John, our devout father. Intercede with Christ
our God, for the salvation of our souls.
Apolytikion of St. Nicholas
As rule of the faith and picture of gentleness, and
teacher of temperance you were exhibited to your
flock, by the truth of the evidence, Thus you acquired the lofty through humility, abundance
through poverty. Father and Hierarch Nicholas,
intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may
be saved.
Kontakion
O Champion General, I your City now ascribe to
you triumphant anthems as the tokens of my gratitude, being rescued from the terrors, O Theotokos.
Inasmuch as you have power unassailable, from all
kinds of perils free me so that unto you I may cry
aloud: Rejoice, O unwedded Bride.
Saints and Feasts
SUNDAY OF ST. JOHN CLIMACOS
St. John Climacos authored the great spiritual work
“The Ladder (Climaca) of Divine Ascent.” He is
commemorated during Lent as his writings affirm
him as a standard proponent of Christian asceticism.
He was born in the 6th century. Having received a
solid intellectual formation, he renounced the pleasures of this life for love of God and went to Mount
Sinai and consecrated himself to the Lord. He submitted body and soul to an elder called Martyrios
and set himself, free from all care, to climb that spiritual ladder (climax) at the top of which God stands.
In spite of this perfect submission, Martyrios kept
him as a novice for four years and only tonsured
him when he was 20, after having tested his humility. When, later, Martyrios and his disciple paid a
visit to John the Savaite, one of the most famous
ascetics of the time, the latter, ignoring the elder,
poured water over John's feet. After they had left,
John the Savaite declared that he did not know the
young monk but, under the inspiration of the Holy
Spirit, he had washed the feet of the Abbot of Sinai.
On the death of Martyrios, he resolved to continue
his ascension in solitude. He chose a solitary place
called Tholas, where other hermits lived, each not
far from the others. He stayed there for 40 years,
consumed by an ever-increasing love of God, free
of all contact with men. When the Saint had sojourned 40 years in the desert, he was charged by
God to be at the head of this new Israel by becoming abbot of the monastery at the foot of the holy
mountain (c. 650).
LEONIDAS, BISHOP OF ATHENS
The Holy Martyrs Leonidas and Charissa, Nike, Galina, Kalisa (Kalida), Nunekhia, Basilissa,
and Theodora suffered
at Corinth in the year
258. They threw them
into the sea, but they did
not drown. Instead, they
walked upon the water
as if on dry land, singing
spiritual hymns. The
torturers overtook them
in a ship, tied stones
around their necks and
drowned them.

THANKING GOD
As Orthodox Christians, we are called
to a new way of seeing things – a new
way of life. Stewardship is obedience to
the greatest commandment to “love the
Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and
strength.” We are called to bring ourselves and others to commit our lives to
Jesus Christ in such a way that leads us
to the joy of knowing him personally
and profoundly. Thus, the question is
not, “How much do I give to stay in the
club?” or “What are the dues?” The real
question we need to ask ourselves is
“How do I thank God for my many
blessings?”
LEAVE THE REST TO GOD
You cannot do everything, but you can
do something. God wants you to do
your best and leave the rest to him.
Saint Theofan said, “Exert all your
strength, but rest your concern for success on God.” The Lord doesn’t expect
any more from us than what we have to
offer. But He does expect us to be faithful and that we do our very best for
Him. We do our best and leave the rest
to Him.

and fellowship to those in need. Volunteers for cooking, serving meals
and cleanup between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm - along with monetary
donations for the purchase of food - are welcome and needed. Remember the book of Matthew 25:35-36: “...For I was hungry and you
gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger
and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick
and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.” Your assistance helps feed approximately 100 people every Monday. Thank you
for your support. Please call Chris Palaidis at 727-808-3895 for further information.

the Senior level. Kyriakos Faklis was selected as an alternate in the Junior Level
and Theofilos Klonaris was selected as
one of the District Finalists.
Theo will go on to present on May 13-15
