CHURCH GOSPEL AND SERMON ETIQUETTE
It is disrespectful to arrive late for Liturgy and walk to a front pew
while our clergy are reading the Gospel or delivering their sermons. It
is also distracting to others who are attempting to concentrate on the
message. If you must enter Liturgy late, you are kindly asked to take a
seat at the very back until the Gospel or sermon are completed.

$1,000 is the target amount, no amount is too small – or too large. If you are unable to
help, we welcome your prayers and moral support.

EPISTLE Hebrews 4:14-16, 5:1-6
B
rethren, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the
Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is
unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been
tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne
of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every
high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to
God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt
himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art
my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest
for ever, after the order of Melchizedek."
GOSPEL Mark 8:34-38; 9:1
T
he Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up
his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever
loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to
gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life?
For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of
him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with
the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here
who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."
HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION)
Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is
only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who
have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the
direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We
remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the
end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.

Saints and Feasts
SUNDAY OF THE HOLY CROSS
Not only does the Sunday of the Holy Cross prepare
us for commemoration of the Crucifixion, but it also
reminds us that the whole of Lent is a period when
we are crucified with Christ. As we have “crucified
the flesh with its passions and desires” (Galatians
5:24), and will have mortified ourselves during
these 40 days of the Fast, the precious and lifegiving Cross is now placed before us to refresh our
souls and encourage us. The Cross reminds us of the
Passion of our Lord and encourages us to follow
Him in struggle and sacrifice, being refreshed, assured, and comforted. In other words, we must experience what the Lord experienced during His Passion - being humiliated in a shameful manner. The
Cross teaches us that through pain and suffering we
shall see the fulfillment of our hopes: the heavenly
inheritance and eternal glory.

and for six years she remained under his custody.
Soon after his defeat by the Bulgarians, Theodoros
gave away his throne to his nephew Michael II.
Michael II met young Theodora and was impressed
by her so much that he asked her to marry him. As
soon as they got married, Theodora moved to Arta
where she became queen. The couple was not at all
compatible. She was very religious, while he enjoyed carnal relationships. Unable to follow him in
his social life, Theodora was forced to withdraw
and the gap between them grew bigger. He fell in
love with a local woman belonging to the high society of Arta, whom he brought to the Royal Court
and soon next to him on the throne of Epirus; together they had two sons. It was at this point that
Queen Theodora decided to abandon the palace,

she was suffering, Theodora never lost her faith in

THANKING GOD
As Orthodox Christians, we are called
to a new way of seeing things – a new
way of life. Stewardship is obedience to
the greatest commandment to “love the
Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and
strength.” We are called to bring ourselves and others to commit our lives to
Jesus Christ in such a way that leads us
to the joy of knowing him personally
and profoundly. Thus, the question is
not, “How much do I give to stay in the
club?” or “What are the dues?” The real
question we need to ask ourselves is
“How do I thank God for my many
blessings?”
LEAVE THE REST TO GOD
You cannot do everything, but you can
do something. God wants you to do
your best and leave the rest to him.
Saint Theofan said, “Exert all your
strength, but rest your concern for success on God.” The Lord doesn’t expect
any more from us than what we have to
offer. But He does expect us to be faithful and that we do our very best for
Him. We do our best and leave the rest
to Him.

ST NICHOLAS KITCHEN
St Nicholas Kitchen is an outreach ministry which provides a hot meal
and fellowship to those in need. Volunteers for cooking, serving meals
and cleanup between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm - along with monetary
donations for the purchase of food - are welcome and needed. Remember the book of Matthew 25:35-36: “...For I was hungry and you
gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger
and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick
and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.” Your assistance helps feed approximately 100 people every Monday. Thank you
for your support. Please call Chris Palaidis at 727-808-3895 for further information.
PASCHAL SEASON DECORATIONS
Parishioners are invited to contribute to help defray the
cost of floral decoration and other supplies needed by our
Cathedral for Great Lent and Holy Week. Kindly drop off
your monetary gift at the parish office or call 727-9373540 to pay by credit card.
JOIN US FOR LENTEN DINNER
Every Wednesday evening, following the Presanctified
Liturgy, we will be offering a Lenten dinner in Fr
Tryfon Hall for all to enjoy. The dinner will be sponsored by the Order of AHEPA and any proceeds will be
donated to St Nicholas Cathedral.

we will be able to accommodate more students.
