latter. Since the narrative isn't really in the voice of the characters and the detail and
atmosphere are scant, to succeed this has to have the direct, impersonal force of a parable or a
case study, which it doesn't. Instead we just meander from incident to incident through deserts
of introspection, as desperate for it all to end as the protagonist himself. The book does give a
good sense of how it can feel to be meek and jealous: oblivious to anything but love, interested
in the beloved largely in the abstract despite a mania for observation. But Svevo himself is too
indistinct from his hero, less interested in Emilio than passively obliged to him in some sort of
vague, impotent sympathy. Svevo was acquainted with Joyce, but Senilità is like 'The Dead' if it
were written by Gabriel rather than experienced by him and scored by Joyce - it's amazing the
talent that's required to preserve the candor of feeling, and how much is lost without it, life itself!

Al di là dell’efficacia con cui descrive i caratteri dei personaggi, il lettore di oggi è chiamato a
fare uno sforzo notevole in line with adattare i concetti espressi dall’autore ai più snelli e più
diretti modi espressivi cui è ormai avvezzo. Cosa che non capita, advert esempio, leggendo I
promessi sposi, del Manzoni, nonostante abbia ben 50 anni in più rispetto a Senilità. Inoltre, di
Senilità possiamo dire che è un romanzo praticamente privo di trama, nel senso che non ha
alcuna importanza quel che accade a livello di “fatti”, poiché si tratta, in fondo, di una seduta
analitica “non dichiarata”, che anticipa quella invece “dichiarata” de l. a. coscienza de Zeno.
Dal punto di vista del godimento narrativo del lettore è un vero fallimento. Manca di ritmo,
manca di un’appropriata “cornice” in cui collocare l. a. storia, manca l’inizio e manca los
angeles fine. Tuttavia è estremamente raffinato nell’esprimere certi stati d’animo, nel
tratteggiare certe specified emozioni, nell’offrire alla nostra attenzione determine come quella di
Amalia ed Emilio, messe “a nudo”, appunto, come se fossero sdraiate sul lettino dello
