Description
Early one morning a doctor sets out with his son on his daily rounds through the forbidding
mountainous countryside. Their visits, a succession of grotesque portraits—a diabetic
industrialist living in incestuous isolation with his half-sister; three brothers, occupying a mill set
in a deep gorge, who have just strangled a bevy of exotic birds; a crippled musical prodigy
whose sister locks him in a cage—lead them to a castle and a paranoid prince, whose "almost
uninterrupted monologue for a hundred pages is a virtuoso verbal performance . . . [in] an
extraordinary, somber first novel."—A.C. Foote, Book World
"What he shares with the best of [writers such as Sartre, Camus, Mann, and Kafka] is the ability
to extract more than utter gloom from his landscape of inconceivable devastation. While the
external surface of life is unquestionably grim, he somehow suggests more—the mystic element
in experience that calls for symbolic interpretation; the inner significance of states that are akin
to surrealistic dream-worlds; man's yearning for health, compassion, sanity."—Robert Maurer,
The Saturday Review
"The feeling grows that Thomas Bernhard is now the most original, concentrated novelist writing
in German. His connections . . . with the great constellation of Kafka, Musil, and Broch become
ever clearer."—George Steiner, Times Literary Supplement
Insightful reviews
Angela: "Each of us is completely isolated, although we are so close. All of living is nothing but
a fervid attempt to move closer together...every day I completely built myself up, and completely
destroyed myself...the continual, outrageous truncation of the mind...while dawn broke, we
abruptly no longer felt ourselves destroyers of one another's nerves...that is the ideal magic
suddenly to be together and find one another bearable...reading is still the most bearable of all
forms of disgust...you will make expeditions into your atrociousness."
Rebecca: this can be a completely unusual book. i have been wondering its narrow two hundred
pages for 2 months, and i am nonetheless now not done. The narrative is loose--a boy is going
at the rounds together with his father, a doctor. by means of web page 80, they've got arrived on
the property of a deranged prince, and the rest a hundred and twenty pages are dedicated to
the rantings of acknowledged prince. there is nearly no attempt to assist you, the reader, make
feel of what's occurring or why this can be important. And but it does not consider selfindulgent--there's a muscular caliber to the book, a confidence, and you are feeling as if
Bernhard completely is aware what he is doing, whether it is not made effortless for you. Why
may still it be? There are too many simple books, effortless movies, easiness is all over the
place and infantilizing. This ebook is baffling, from time to time mind-numbing, violent, strange,
and unknowable, and thanks to those likely bad qualities, it is wonderful.
paura.Tutto troppo semplice in keeping with essere Bernhard.
rimetterà davanti agli occhi innumerevoli volte, magari aggiungendo articoli o aggettivi in corsivo
according to caricare di attenzione certi dettagli. fino a portarti in un vortice claustrofobico senza
through d’uscita.C’è solitudine, nichilismo, disperazione.
imprescindibile.Estremo ma fondamentale. [77/100]
Justin Evans: now not a Bernhard i will be able to think going again to learn in its entirety. this is
often finest in a literary heritage form of way: it we could us watch Bernhard slowly develop into
BERNHARD, as different reviewers have pointed out. The e-book falls in half, setting out as a
Celinean clinical picaresque, and shutting with Bernhard rant delivered, oddly in hindsight,
within the 3rd person. The picaresque jogged my memory of the glorious Joseph Winkler, purely
Winkler does it better. The rant jogs my memory of later Bernhard, which is, again, larger than
this version. yet there are a couple of great moments here, most significantly what I take to be
Bernhard naming his personal literary form, to wit, "the onanism of despair." whilst the prince
says this, he is criticizing the lumpen lots round him, yet it really is particularly transparent that
his personal 100+ web page rant is the true onanism, his melancholy the genuine melancholy
(140-141). and likewise the twist at the "life is yet a stage" trope--sure, it is a stage, we agonize
after which die. however the show, the prince suggests, is a comedy--again, anything that may
be a manifesto for later Bernhard. "All the billions of the human race unfold over the 5
continents are not anything yet one big neighborhood of the dying. Comedy!" (145). Comedy!
