Description

Marcus Vinicius is a passionate Roman tribune; Lygia Callina is a Christian maiden of royal descent and a hostage of Rome. At first Marcus has no notion of love, but he desires Lygia with animalistic intensity. Through political machinations, he contrives to have her taken by force into the decadent splendor of Ceasar's court, setting in motion a series of events that culminate in his own spiritual redemption. Set at the dawn of Christianity, and written with amazing historical accuracy, Quo Vadis won for its author the Nobel Prize. Translated into more than 40 languages, this captivating tale is one of the greatest novels in the history of religious literature.

Newly designed and typeset in a modern 6-by-9-inch format by Waking Lion Press.

Insightful reviews

E non dice “Licia” e “Dio” … no, no … dice “Licia” e … vabbé, soprassediamo, che è meglio.

Chilone non è niente male, almeno all’inizio.

I personaggi più propriamente storici, quali Nerone, Poppea, Tigellino, Petronio and so on sono tratteggiati esattamente come da relative voci enciclopediche. Sienkiewicz nulla aggiunge e

nulla toglie. E neppure nulla azzarda e ipotizza.

While the 1951 film is excellent, it is dated; the novel, however, transcends time. The heartrending and vivid portrait of Roman life in the days of Nero combines a romance with the acta sanctorum amid breathtaking historical accuracy. The feelings of the young tribune Marcus Vinicius for the Christian maiden Ligia Callina are transformed by sacrifice and suffering from mere lust into profound love and devotion. In the meantime the early Church prepares to face a grueling ordeal at the hands of Nero. The brutality and decadence of Imperial Rome stand in glaring contrast to the indefatigable new sect, guided and instructed by Peter and Paul. The Christians must deal not only with the violence of the pagans but with some of their own members who betray and deceive. Indeed, part of the impact of the novel is the way it conveys continuity of the past with the present. Followers of Christ must struggle with their own sins and weaknesses as much as with the outside world which seeks to destroy them. It was not easy then; it is not easy now.

Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) received the Nobel Prize for "Quo Vadis." He was writing to encourage his Polish countrymen in their many difficulties, and combined superb story-telling with painstaking historical research. Although I prefer the book to the movie, I do not hesitate to recommend the latter. Among 1950's Biblical epics, Quo Vadis is outstanding. Peter Ustinov's performance as Nero is truly something worth watching; few actors could capture the same balance of comedy, pathos and unmitigated depravity. The sets are magnificent as well, and the flow of drama, quite piercing. It is a good way to glean both history and inspiration while being entertained.

Henry Avila: Roman Emperor Nero, is a singer of beautiful songs, his first love, he himself composes, if you don't like them, better keep your opinions unsaid, you'll live a longer life. Nero has killed his mother, wife, brother, all his family, and many former friends. Only unlimited praise, the mighty Caesar enjoys ( but that he is terrible, his voice and music, is a small sacrifice for his friendship and the vast benefits, he showers) ... Petronius, the "Arbiter of Elegance", and close friend of the vicious ruler, has much influence in the court. A well educated and secret writer of The Satyricon, the first novel, with poetry. He doesn't take credit as the author, Petronius likes to live in Rome, not exiled, as others have been. The book ridicules certain Roman patricians, their society, both he is part of ! In the arts, nobody knows more than he.

Marcus Vinicius, a military tribune, his nephew, back from a war in Asia Minor, informs his uncle in the opulent steamy Roman Baths, that he has fallen madly in love, with a pretty maiden.

While recovering from an injury in the house of Aulus Plautius, a retired, and honored general, who helped in conquering Britain. The girl is the daughter of a foreign king, a Roman hostage, now living in the home, of the General's and Pomponia Graecina, the wife of Aulus, she , becomes very fond of her, treated like a daughter. Since all her relatives perished, Lygia, now considers them her new family. The young patrician soldier must have her as his concubine, but Lygia, is a secret Christian, who though she loves him, will not accept that. Marcus seeks his uncle's influence to get the girl, away from her loved ones. Nero has Lygia, come to his palace to be examined, the Emperor likes attractive women, but the noble, clever, arbiter of elegance, tells him, she is too narrow in the hips, not true, and a compliment today, but it saves the lady.

Poppaea, the Emperor's cruel new wife, hates the maiden, naturally, Tigellinus, ambitious head of the Praetorian Guard, he likes to kill, hates Petronius, his arch- rival. Given to Marcus, but with the help of Ursus, Lygia's devoted servant, as big as a giant and as strong as an ox, escapes easily, before reaching the tribune's house . Which so angers the lovesick Marcus, that nothing else matters, but to recover his prize, greatly effecting his health. With the assistance of Christians, including St. Peter and Paul, she is well hidden. Fires break out soon after, in the vast city, countless building are incinerated, the great capital of the world, is tumbling down.

People are perishing in its flames, shooting high , into the night sky, bright now as daylight, crowds are streaming out of the infernal, the thick smoke , chokes, the heat and flames, killing thousands, winds spreading the insatiable fires. Everyone but Marcus, the soldier, flee, in a desperate effort to rescue his beloved, enters the doomed town, staggering, in the hopeless search, hardly able to breath, falling but getting up, he must continue the quest, or die trying ...

The frightened Nero, afraid of the people's wrath, blames the obscure Christians, for the disaster, many will bravely die in the bloody arena. The Roman masses, must be appeased !

Margo: This booklet has just a little a sluggish start, yet when you get prior the purpose the place Roman males are debating no matter if girls have a soul (which i assumed was once

comical), the booklet is far more uncomplicated and extra attention-grabbing to read. I completely enjoyed the book- the plot was once very attention-grabbing and believable, which i believe is important for any historic fiction. I enjoyed how the e-book wasn't afraid to discuss universal cultural ideals and practices for the time period, specifically approximately girls and slavery, that is total an academic must-have for historic fiction. on the similar time, it was once transparent from the plot that the writer did not really think lots of these biased views, which helped decrease any % errors. Moreover, I enjoyed the tale approximately how a misplaced guy reveals his faith, even if he makes such a lot of blunders alongside the best way that it truly is virtually demanding to think through the top that the nature is not an antagonist. it is a appealing tale of Christianity, and that i imagine the booklet competently describes the faults of Christians whereas whilst the aspirations and goodness that Christians desire to accomplish (through the heroine).

Kirsti: Christians! Lions! Romans! O r g i e s! Mayhem! Wow! i will be able to see why this ebook has been translated into greater than 50 languages. even though it was once initially released in 1895, it does not appear dated. The plot strikes speedy (even frantically sometimes), and that i concept the most characters have been good developed.Because this publication is within the public domain, you could learn it at no cost through venture Gutenberg (www.gutenberg.org) or BookBot (book-bot.com).

Simon: this can be the worst ebook i've got ever learn that did not have the phrases "Danielle Steele" someplace at the disguise . ..until you hit the outline of Nero's burning of Rome. for roughly 30 pages it truly is terrific, after which reverts again to a couple of the worst prose and suppressed erotic perversity i've got ever laid eyes upon. these nutty early Christians spend loads of time golden-haired maidens in diaphanous gowns, and there's a second the place Petronius has his slave Eunice whipped rather than dosing her with saltpeter that's simply . .

.wow.
