The Hague: an authentic Dutch city
Welcome to The Hague, royal city by the sea!
Some destinations should be cherished forever
and The Hague is one of them. International
city of peace and justice; new styles and old
masters; chain stores and royal palaces; exotic
cuisine and fishing port; beach resorts and
residence of the King and Queen.
Home to the royal family
The Hague has been home to the royal
family for centuries. With its many historical
monuments, residential and working palaces,
royal routes, coaches and horses and the
favourite addresses of King Willem Alexander
and Queen Maxima, there is no denying that
The Hague is the home of the royal family. The
influence of 400 years of nobility and royal
blood has ensured that the city still radiates
a chic and alluring air. In addition to its royal
allure, The Hague also plays an important role
as the political capital of the Netherlands.
Discover the beach
The sea is just a stone’s throw away. The Hague
is the only city in the Netherlands by the sea.
The 11 km beach is less than 15 minutes away
from the historical city centre by tram or by
bike. Moreover, with three beach clubs opening
up year-round for the first time in 2015/2016,
the renovation of the outside terrace of the
Grand Hotel Amrâth Kurhaus and the reopening
of the Pier, Scheveningen is even more unique
as a place where shopping, culture, activities,
eating and drinking take central stage.
The Hague; home to the Royal family

International city of peace and justice
The Hague, the United Nations’ second city,
is synonymous with international law, peace
and justice. There are over 160 international
organisations based in The Hague, among
them the renowned Peace Palace.
Rich culture
The Hague is home to a wealth of museums
and attractions. Boasting some modern art,
intimate theatre plays, classical masterpieces,
world-famous museums and bustling festivals
all contribute to the city’s reputation for being a
magnificent cultural potpourri all year round.
Green city
Considering the population density of the
Netherlands, visitors to The Hague are always
amazed to find such an abundance of lush
greenery throughout the city. Renowned are
the dunes, the Palace Garden, Zorgvliet and
the Japanese garden in Clingendael Park.
From fresh fish to exotic cuisine
A visit to The Hague offers a wealth of choice
that will appeal to all tastes. Sit down along
one of the beautiful canals or let your guests
dine in ‘t Goude Hooft, the oldest inn (1423)
in the city. The harbour is a great choice for
having a group dinner against a dynamic
backdrop with sailing yachts and fisheries. As
‘widow of the Dutch East Indies’ the city also
boasts a wide range of restaurants serving
elaborate ‘rice tables’ in typical colonial
atmosphere.
Great accessibility
Access to the European market is great as the
city is connected through two international
airports within 30 minutes. Moreover, all
major tourist attractions are in close proximity
of the city: Delft (10 minutes), Rotterdam (20
minutes), Gouda (30 minutes) and Keukenhof
(30 minutes). Amsterdam is just 45 minutes
away.

Wining & Dining
Restaurants in The Hague mix trendy and
authentic with a diversity of world cuisine.
Regardless of the cuisine your guests prefer,
you have plenty to choose from in The Hague.
Both the historical city centre and beach resort
Scheveningen offer your guests a wealth of
choice that appeals to all tastes and budgets,
varying from a BBQ at a beach club to
a deluxe five course dinner at the highest
restaurant in the Netherlands.
Widow of the Dutch East Indies
Before it gained independence in 1945,
Indonesia was a colony of the Netherlands.
The Dutch who worked in Indonesia regularly
returned home and stayed mainly in The
Hague, where the Ministry of Colonies
was based. Between 1850 and 1900 the
Archipel neighbourhood was built and it was
here that former colonists settled. It was during
this period that the city earned its nickname
‘Widow of Indonesia’. The Indonesian culture
can still be sampled in the city with a wide
range of restaurants serving elaborate ‘rice
tables’ in typical colonial atmosphere.
Sunset dinner
As a city by the sea, The Hague is renowned
for its fresh seafood. For a sunset dinner in
the city, Scheveningen is the right choice.
Scheveningen harbour in particular offers a
dynamic backdrop for an atmospheric stroll
and delicious intermezzos. The view of the
fisheries, beautiful yachts and powerboats
makes the fresh fish taste even better. No
matter what time of year, dining in the harbour
is possible all year round.
Chinatown
You can get a taste of Asia once you pass
through the impressive Chinese gates in the
centre of The Hague. Chinatown, with its
Asian restaurants offering dim sum, sushi
and noodles, is a must for anyone wanting
something a bit different for a change.
Sociable drinks
The drinks culture appears to have been
discovered in The Hague. Cast your gaze
on any one of the charming squares in the
afternoon or in the special wine bars and
you will find enough confirmation. We love
a sociable drink in The Hague. Where to
go? Het Plein, De Plaats, Grote Markt or
Schevening beach.
Beach clubs
Every year around March, a transformation
takes place at the beach of Scheveningen.
Over 35 beach clubs are then built up and
transform the coastal town into a true hotspot.
Walk along the boulevard or onto the sand
and find your perfect beach club to sit down
and relax. For the first time in 2015/2016,
three beach clubs are open year round.

2015 Mauritshuis:
Rembrandt? The Case
of Saul and David
Saul and David has been
meticulously researched
and restored during recent
years, and will be presented
for the first time during this
exhibition. In the past, Saul
and David was considered
one of Rembrandt’s top
pieces, but is it actually the
work of the master? This
exhibition shows how, using
the latest technology and
research methods, fascinating
discoveries were made about
the creation, the history and
the attribution of the painting.

Dutch Fashion
These days, Dutch fashion is a constant
presence in catwalk shows around the world.
This exhibition tells the story of the rise of top
fashion in the Netherlands, from the early
days via the careers of highflyers like Max
Heymans, Frans Molenaar and Fong Leng,
right through to the stars of today.

Gemeentemuseum The
Hague: Colour Unleashed
This exhibition focuses
on a period of rapid and
revolutionary change that
occurred in the art of the
Netherlands and Belgium in
the early twentieth century.
Following the lead of Monet,
Van Gogh and Matisse, artists
like Jan Sluijters, Jan Toorop
and Piet Mondrian achieved
the complete liberation of
colour in Dutch and Belgian
modern art. They and their
illustrious predecessors in
France are the stars of this
show.

Mauritshuis: Dutch SelfPortraits – Selfies on the
Golden Age
The self-portrait is perhaps
the best expression of the
phenomenal explosion of the
art of painting that took place
in the Dutch Golden Age. This
exhibition will offer a focused
overview of the genre, with
an emphasis on self-portraits
that show the tools of the
trade, a category that is
particularly well-represented in
Dutch art.

Gemeentemuseum The
Hague: Karel Appel
In 2016 it will be ten years
since Karel Appel’s death:
time for a new generation of
visitors to look afresh at an
oeuvre that many people still
associate with Cobra and the
1950s, although it actually
extends over a period of
more than sixty years. This
major retrospective, therefore,
reconsiders many aspects of
Appel’s work from a number
of (sometimes unexpected)
points of view.

Gemeentemuseum The
Hague: Jan Toorop
Jan Toorop is among the most
renowned Symbolist painters
produced by the Netherlands.
However, in his quest for a
distinctive personal style, he
worked in a far wider range
of styles. It was not until 1891
that – looking beyond the
Dutch borders to artists like
Ensor, Van Gogh and the
Symbolists – he hit on his own
distinctive Symbolist style. The
exhibition presents the first
complete overview of his work
ever to be presented in the
Netherlands.

Mauritshuis: Vik Muniz
The Mauritshuis sheds new
light on its collection through
a special collaboration with
the world-renowned Brazilian
artist Vik Muniz. For the first
time in the history of the
museum, the Mauritshuis
is organising an exhibition
entirely of contemporary works
of art. The inspiration for the
exhibition is the backsides of
the 17th-century paintings in
the museum’s collection. This
creates a delightful connection
between the modern art of
Muniz and the world-famous
paintings of the Mauritshuis.
4 February - 8 May 2016
Mauritshuis: Highs and Lows
out of Storage
What a museum keeps
in store appeals to the
imagination. Some believe
that there must be racks of
unknown treasures wrongfully
hidden from the public. With
this exhibition, the Mauritshuis
wants to show the invisible
part of the collection: what
is not (yet) on display, and
why not? The selection of
paintings contains a number
of surprises, such as a work
by Andy Warhol, which you
probably wouldn’t associate
with the Mauritshuis.

January 2017
Mauritshuis: Masters of the
Everyday - Dutch Artists in
the Age of Vermeer
In the autumn of 2016,
the Mauritshuis will exhibit
a selection of twenty
seventeenth-century Dutch
masterpieces from the British
Royal Collection, the largest
loan to a Dutch museum
to date. The selection is
the largest loan to a Dutch
museum to date and contains
representations of daily life as
depicted by painters of the
Dutch Golden Age. The Royal
Collection contains unique
highlights from the oeuvres
of famous painters such as
Jan Steen, Pieter de Hooch,
Gabriel Metsu and Johannes
Vermeer.
2017 – ‘International
De Stijl Year’
Gemeentemuseum The Hague:
Piet Mondriaan and Bart van
der Leck
Without Mondriaan and the
artists of De Stijl movement,
today’s international art scene
and the Netherlands we
know would have looked very
different. Even now, their work
continues to inspire designers
and couturiers worldwide. To
mark the centenary of the birth
of De Stijl group, 2017 has
been proclaimed ‘International
De Stijl Year’. For that reason,
the museum organises an
exhibition on Bart van der Leck
and Piet Mondriaan.
