edition 39 | saturday 5 march
On Saturday, March 5th, 2016 Dag in de Branding celebrates blossoming of spring with
sounds from Italy. Two concerts are dedicated to the mesmerizing world of Salvatore
Sciarrino. Christian Karlsen directs the Dutch premiere of his Studi per l'Intonazione del
Mare, a community project, performed by a core of professional musicians and an orchestra
of 100 semi-professional flutists and 100 saxophonists. And Modelo62 performs Sciarrino’s
Esplorazione del Bianco II
There is also plenty of space for works by young artists. Volinist Joseph Puglia presents
both Berio's infamous Sequenza VIII and his 34 Duets for two Violins. Ensemble Modelo62
plays Graphein by the French composer Raphaël Cendo: the result of his research on the
complexity of sound. Modelo62 also performs two compositions by Turkish composer Emre
Kaleli: Il voto dell'innocenza and [N.12] Five Love Songs for ensemble. And Natalia
Dominguez Rangel presents 10.01, a brand new audiovisual installation commissioned by
the Dag in the Branding Festival.
Diamant Fabriek performs Eichmann by writer/director Bo Tarenskeen and composer Maria
Alejandra Castro Espejo. This opera was created in response to the present debate about
free will and Hannah Arendt’s book Eichmann in Jerusalem - A Report on the Banality of
Evil. Last but not least we present Kontakte by KarlHeinz Stockhausen: electronic tape
sounds colliding head-on with the timbres of percussion and piano or suggest depth in a
sweeping aural patchwork landscape. Unforgettable: the moment when microscopic pulses
gradually transforming itself into a low E, which then squeezes itself into the piano.

ABOUT US
Early in 2005 several music venues in The Hague joined forces to set about raising the
profile and allure of contemporary music in The Hague to enhance the city's cultural
status. The initiative, supervised by the Johan Wagenaar Foundation resulted in
September 2006 in Dag in de Branding: a festival for contemporary music which takes
place four times a year in various theatres and locations in The Hague. Each edition of
Dag in de Branding gives audiences the opportunity to hear the latest in contemporary
music, form classical to popular, from improvised jazz to audio-visual and multimedia
events.
A second significant step was taken in 2011, with the establishment of the 'Huis voor de
Nieuwe Muziek' (Home fof the New Music). This 'Home' is not an edifice of stone and
mortar, but a virtual home: the city of The Hague, the Royal Residence with its ensembles,
orchestras and composers, its many venues, festivals, postgraduate production centers
and training programs. The aim of 'Het Huis voor de Nieuwe Muziek' is to strengthen
existing partnerships and realize projects that are beyond the (financial) scope of the
individual partners.
