The Federal Depository Library Program
The Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) was established by Congress to ensure
that the American public has access to its Government's information. Since 1813,
depository libraries have safeguarded the public's right to know by collecting, organizing,
maintaining, preserving, and assisting users with information from the Federal
Government. The mission of the FDLP is to disseminate information products from all
three branches of the Government to over 1,250 libraries nationwide.
The University of Kentucky Libraries joins 42 other land-grant university libraries in the
United States celebrating their 100th year as a Federal Depository Library. Our
depository offers the UK community and citizens of the Commonwealth free access to
federal government information provided through the Federal Depository Library
Program (FDLP). The collection consists of over one million books, microforms, maps,
posters, CDs, and videotapes, as well as access to many online databases and
websites.

The UK Libraries were designated a landgrant Federal Depository library in
1907, shortly after the Wright brothers
made their first flight at Kitty Hawk, NC, in
1903.
This flight was re-enacted to
celebrate the golden anniversary of the
flight in 1953; see p. 16 of H. Doc 480 from
the 83rd Congress.

As America and the world inches toward war and voting rights are granted to
women, the depository collection begins to grow in UK's new Carnegie library
building.

Exuberance about the "War to end all Wars" breeds both great expansion
and great contraction in the Roaring Twenties as Prohibition begins and the
stock market crashes.

America engages in social relief and entitlement while fighting the Depression,
the UK library moves into a new building, and the UK depository collection more
than doubles as it receives a gift of over 4,000 volumes from Centre College in
1933.

Shaken by the death of a young president and two civil rights leaders, the United States waged two
wars--one against Communism, one against racism--and found the energy to go to the moon. The
UK Libraries' Federal Depository was designated the Regional Depository for the state of Kentucky
in 1967, and a separate Government Publications Dept. was created in 1968.

The United States prospered as never before while impeaching a president, standing up to Saddam
Hussein for the first time, and investing in the Internet. The Federal Depository collection from
1976 to the present became accessible via our online catalog in 1992.
