Solar Panel Installation GREEN JOBS: DEGREE OF INVOLVEMENT • Pay a Living Wage • Provide Career Advancement Opportunities Multiple Industries Ex. Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, Waste Management, Biological Services, etc. Indirect Jobs Ex. Accountants, Truck Drivers, Lawyers, etc. 40% of green jobs expected in making buildings energy efficient, therefore many green jobs are in construction. But not all! What are Green Jobs? Jobs that conserve energy, expand renewable energy sources, conserve or improve the environment. . . 40% of energy is used to heat and cool buildings. Many Green Jobs are Nontraditional to Women. Many green jobs offer better wages and benefits. (99% of carpenters are men…wages average $18.72/hr.; 98% of preschool teachers are women…wages average $11.48/hr.—or the teacher would have to work 25 more hours/week to match the carpenter’s income.) Why Green Jobs for Women? Women can start with any skill level. (Women with a high school education to those with advanced degrees. . .or with diverse aptitudes ranging from mathematics to mechanics to management can find a niche in the green economy. ) For instance – One Study of Green Employers in Berkeley, CA. . . found that 86% of the green business owners interviewed hired workers who had no previous direct experience and 94% offered on-the-job training to entry-level employees. Why Green Jobs for Women? Green jobs often offer career paths so that women can grow professionally. Not every job has a career ladder, but each job can be a stepping stone to improve skills and move toward a greater career goal. Why Green Jobs for Women? Green jobs appeal to workers with a diversity of skills and interests. (i.e., home insulators do hands-on work, while recycling coordinators supervise operations and set collection schedules.) Green jobs can be indoors or outdoors. Women need to understand all of the opportunities available to them! Why Green Jobs for Women? Women in green jobs have the satisfaction of knowing that they are contributing to a healthier environment now and for future generations . How Do I Get Started in a Green Job? Training for green occupations is offered: On-the-job Paid Union Apprenticeships Industry Associations Nonprofit sponsored programs Formal degree programs How Do I Get Started in a Green Job? The Recovery Act and other Federal funding : Can dramatically expand the green employment and training options for women (and men). Offers grants for on-the-job training and support services to increase participation of minorities in transportation projects. How Do I Get Started in a Green Job? The Workforce Investment Act and Weatherization Assistance Program (WIA) also offer job training grants and opportunities to support women in green jobs. How Do I Get Started in a Green Job? Some career paths, (i.e. electrician), can begin with high school or vocational school and then on to a community college, trade school, an apprenticeship or certification program.
