PARADIGM
TOURISM AS A NEW CHALLENGE
• tourism represents nowadays 5% of the European GDP
Economic and • provides 6% of employment
• with more than 2 million companies in Europe
business
interests
Societal
interests
Technical
challenges
• due to the fact that any action on tourist destinations will affect
directly both citizens living in this area AND tourists visiting it
• since tourism is a complex, geographically bounded and culturally
diverse sector in which future internet technologies have an
obvious stakeholder and can be spread along all the value chain

Smart Destinations: Addressing European
Mobility and Multiculturalism through the FI
On the one hand, the growing trend of a healthier and
wealthier ageing population with plenty of free time to
travel demand new services focused on providing easily
accessible and natural interactions in non usual
environments
On the other hand, the integration of temporal labor
travelers of different statuses, cultures and ethnicities
must also be taken into account when rethinking the
Future Internet and all its potential travel and tourism
applications.
A new way to create, promote and consume services should
be considered as part of the concept of online human centric
services, including challenges of short-time visitors.
