Month ##, 200#
Congratulations!
Congratulations on being selected as a
Campaign Captain!
Campaign Captains are often selected because they are the
leaders, motivators and rising stars of a company.
Your role as a Campaign Captain is very important to us.
We rely on dedicated people like yourself to help raise awareness
about the important work that United Way does.
When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of
all. That’s what it means to LIVE UNITED.
Your Role as a Campaign Captain
Increase Awareness
Increase awareness
Use your local United Way to help your colleagues understand the critical issues
that face our community why their support is so important.
– Employee briefings. Invite your local United Way representative to speak
to your team about United Way and how we advance the common good.
– Lunch n’ Learns. Use this time to help employees understand how they
can get involved with United Way. A local United Way can be on hand to
deliver a presentation, answer questions and speak about the importance
of volunteer and advocacy activities.
– Webinars. Communicating to a wide-spread audience can be difficult, but
webinars make it easy and fun! Encourage people to leave comments
about how they LIVE UNITED, vote on volunteer activities that they find
valuable and sign-up to be photographed in a LIVE UNITED t-shirt.
Incentives such as snacks, lunch or raffle tickets help drive attendance to events.

Encourage Employee Engagement
Encourage employee engagement
You can build teamwork and morale by developing a community of
investors within your company that want to make the tri-state area a
better place to live and work.
– Volunteer opportunities. Arrange for your team to read to
children, stock food pantries, work at a soup kitchen or collect
items for a shelter. There are so many opportunities for you to
make a difference.
– Skills-based volunteer activities. Offer skills-based activities to
employees to provide help to their local United Way. Contact your
local United Way representative to find out what skills are most
needed (IT, marketing, accounting, HR, etc.).
– Affinity groups. United Way offers opportunities for your
colleagues to join a larger philanthropic community that works to
solve community problems. Contact your local United Way
representative to find out more.

Giving to United Way
Contributions to United Way are important investments in the
community.
Donors can allocate their gift in two ways:
• To United Way. When donors give to United Way, their gift will be
distributed throughout the tri-state area and will change lives for
the better.
• To a United Way impact fund. Donors can specify that they want
to target their gift to United Way Education, Income or Health
initiatives.
Donors can see how their donation makes a difference by visiting
liveunitedtristate.org and signing up for United Way eUpdates.
Your Role as a Campaign Captain
Employee engagement: Give. Advocate. Volunteer.
Your involvement with United Way will make a difference; we
invite you to LIVE UNITED and be a part of the change.
• Read our Steps to Success in the following slides for more
information on employee giving.
• Employees can advocate for issues that they care about.
Advocacy occurs as people speak out to educate others, gather
support and affect change.
• United Way offers a variety of volunteer programs designed for
busy working adults, youth and retirees. Organize volunteer
opportunities for your colleagues or invite them to visit
liveunitedtristate.org.

Steps to Success
During the Campaign
Make the ask
Emails and packet drop-offs are great, but they are just the
beginning; truly successful campaigns require a personal
touch. Here is your chance to be creative and get to know your
colleagues!
• Distribute brochures and pledge forms to your department. Give
the Leadership Giving guide to those who may make a gift of
$1,500 or more.
• Meet one-to-one with co-workers to talk about United Way.
• Encourage new employees to give and past donors to increase
their gift by $10, $25, $50, or more. Every dollar makes a
difference!
• Lead by example – referencing your own contribution helps make
the case.
• Communicate the goals that you have set for the department.
• Do not be afraid to re-approach co-workers who haven’t given
yet.
Steps to Success
Post-Campaign
Say “Thank You!”
• Send an e-mail, letter or handwritten note to donors – it is
always appreciated.
• An inexpensive breakfast (coffee & donuts) is a great way
to thank your co-workers.
• Encourage people to receive year-round eUpdates at
liveunitedtristate.org to keep track of the impact of their
donation.

assess community needs, mobilize partners and resources, implement strategies and
measure results.
Why should I give to United Way rather than to a specific nonprofit agency?
• Every dollar you give to United Way funds initiatives that are evaluated and measured,
assuring that your investment makes the greatest possible impact.
How is the money I give to United Way invested?
• Donations to United Way fund initiatives that improve the Education, Income and Health of our
communities. You can choose to target your own investment to one of these initiatives.
How do I know that United Way is efficient with my donation?
• United Way’s overhead costs in the region range from 10 to 18%, which compares favorably
with other charities across the nation. United Way leverages funds raised with funding from
foundations and government agencies to maximize impact.

• Residents of New Jersey, Connecticut and parts of New York can dial 2-1-1 to be connected to
