What we are doing
• We have developed an “Ideal R&D Program” by area with a
multi-level Work Breakdown structure
• This is being prioritized on an international
basis, and has been used to identify gaps
• Priorities of short-term fund distribution are asked by
some Funding Agencies and will influence future
proposals
• Our Board Member Eckhard Elsen is RDB Data Integrator.
We are taking the data from Proposals and Programs and
putting them in a Common Format - with support from the
CERN Project tools team: J.DeJonghe et al.
• First deadline was for this meeting, examples in next slides.
• This will be evolved to include schedules and resources. The
resources will be broad categories: small, medium, and
large, so that we may estimate wide categories with sensible
weights. We see already that there are many schedule links,
requiring rough timelines to see how the linkages work out.

What the RDB is asked to do
•
•
Take a Global View
Structured R&D Projects, “Projectized”
•
•
Proposal Driven
Accelerator + Detector
What we can do quickly:
• We created a Structured “Ideal R&D Program” for
the accelerator to compare with the actual
proposals and programs, to ensure that the R&D
needed for an early construction start gets done
without Gaps.
• We evaluated Priorities (1-4, 1=very high) based on
risk and complexity of critical R&D to get the work
done on time - this will need follow-up

Summary & Next Steps
• Scope of R&D program well described and
understood
• CERN team transfers to Data Base and
generates a variety of Reports
• We will make our information available to
funding distribution reviews on request
• We will add time line information and study
schedule linkage
• The data must be upgraded and tracked fairly
often, including changes in plans
• We should have a more finished product in
about three months.
