Who can apply for Faculty
Development Funds?
 Individual full-time regular University
Faculty members,
 Teams of full-time regular University
Faculty, or
 Departments representing full-time
regular University Faculty
What types of activities do Faculty
Development Funds support?
 Activities supporting the academic efforts at
Gallaudet University, focusing on recruitment,
retention and workplace transition of students.
What types of activities do Faculty
Development Funds support?
 Invited lectures or workshops of interest
either to a particular school or department
or to the faculty at large.

during a campus-wide event on April 21.
What types of activities do Faculty
Development Funds support?
 Institutes, workshops, seminars, short courses, or
other non-credit course work to improve teaching
skills, refresh and broaden expertise in a particular
content area, and/or retrain faculty members in new
areas of expertise.
What types of activities do Faculty
Development Funds support?
 Domestic or international travel funds are
available for the purpose of delivering a paper,
poster, workshop, chairing sessions at a
professional meeting.
When can I submit a proposal?
 We will have three or four Calls for Proposals during
the academic year. We are in the process of looking
at our dates and these will be published soon.
 Look for our general Call for Proposals that will be sent
to all faculty members via email.

What do I need to
include in my proposal?
 Your proposal must include the following –
 A budget page (that is on our standard form and will be sent
out with the guidelines during our Call for Proposals) – Please
ask your department or school for a contribution.
 Documentation for all of the activities you plan to do.
Most faculty members travel which means you will need
documentation for your conference registration fee, lodging,
airfare or other travel fare, ground transportation
information, meals (per diem), stipends (during times when
faculty are not paid), interpreting services and/or
miscellaneous items.
What do I need to include in my
proposal?
 Each proposal must, in no more than five double-spaced pages, provide a
statement that adheres to the following criteria:
 describes the purpose and need of the proposed activity for faculty;
 describes the proposed activity or activities that address the need;
 indicates the intended outcomes of the proposed activity or
activities;
 This intended outcome statement should include a description of a
simultaneous or follow-up effort related to the proposal activity that
serves to positively impact the Gallaudet Strategic Plan:
recruitment, retention and/or transition to the professional
workplace.
 describes the potential for lasting effect at Gallaudet beyond the
funding period.
How do I submit my proposal?
 The members of the Faculty Development Committee
are in the process of creating a website so you can
submit your proposal online. If the website is not
ready by the first round, then you can still submit it
online or bring 5 copies of it to one of our co-chairs.
Criteria for Judging Proposals
 Criteria for judging proposals will include:
 completed faculty development grant proposal form;
 alignment with and contribution to institutional goals,
mission and/or vision
 itemization of the dollar amount requested;
 purpose and need of the proposed activity for faculty;

 amount of department/school financial contributions to the

activity. Make the recommended contribution (a table will be
provided in our guidelines) or include written justification for a
smaller contribution. Contributions may be real dollars as well
as in-kind contributions that significantly reduce proposalrelated costs.
presentation of the proposed activity (clarity, organization);
feasibility of the proposed activity;
potential for lasting effect at Gallaudet beyond the funding
period
completeness of supporting documents (in cases where
important proposal documents are not yet available, grant
awards may be made contingent on later document delivery to
the Committee)
Brief Reports
 After you complete your Faculty Development Activity, we
require that you submit a brief follow-up report which include
the following:
Your name
Department
Faculty Development Grant Project - many faculty present and
attend conferences so remind us of the name of the conference
Briefly describe what you did
Briefly describe what you learned from the project
Briefly describe how you disseminated materials to your
colleagues.
Include anything else that you would like us to know.
Reimbursement
 In order for you and/or your department to be
reimbursed for your Faculty Development Activity,
please make sure you read your award letter very
carefully. This part changes each year depending on
who is responsible for the funds. This year, questions
about the reimbursement process can be addressed to
Patricia Hulsebosch.
