THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION
(NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at
institutions across the country; NSF’s education
initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global
leader in innovation for generations to come.
BY THE NUMBERS
FLORIDA IN FY 2012
$155 Million: NSF funds awarded
14th: National ranking in NSF funds
45: NSF-funded institutions
599: NSF grants awarded
12: NSF research centers/facilities
EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN FLORIDA
Researchers at the University of South Florida and the University of Florida are investigating
new ways to reduce Internet energy consumption by reducing the energy wasted by idle
network links and networked edge devices such as PCs and set-top boxes. Estimates of the
potential savings from the research are hundreds of millions of dollars per year in the U.S.
NSF-funded researchers at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution and Bigelow
Laboratory for Ocean Sciences are working with a live video system called Eye-in-the-Sea
(EITS). This programmable, battery-powered camera and recording system provides an
opportunity to explore the deep sea with the potential for revealing new species and new
behaviors.
INVESTMENT IN NSF = INVESTMENT IN FLORIDA
The University of Florida, which received nearly $35 million from NSF in FY 2010, has an annual economic
impact of over $5.8 billion.1
The University of South Florida, which received $14 million from NSF in FY 2010, has 230,000 alumni, of
which 76% live in Florida and contribute to the state’s economy 2
In FY 2007, University of Miami was awarded $3 million in NSF funding and contributed $4.5 billion towards
the Miami-Dade county economy, supplying 42,100 jobs and $108 million in state and local fiscal revenues.3

THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION
(NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at
institutions across the country; NSF’s education
initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global
leader in innovation for generations to come.
Since 1952, NSF has supported
45,000 graduate students through
research fellowships.
Florida received $24 million in
NSF educational funding in FY
2012.
EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN FLORIDA
NSF-funded science education researchers at the University of Miami have developed a
teacher professional program that includes science and mathematics achievement among
elementary school students, including English language learners. The program provides
teachers with professional development workshops and new instructional materials.
An international REU site, hosted by the Advanced Materials Processing and Analysis
Center at the University of Central Florida (UCF), provided a unique learning experience for
undergraduate students studying engineering, science, and technology. UCF students had
the opportunity to work with scientists in Poland at Warsaw University.
The Maize-10-Maze Project is a collaborative outreach effort between Florida State
University and Florida A&M University. As part of the Forestry and Conservation Education
Summer Program, a living field map of the maize genome was designed and featured
alongside 100 naturally occurring maize mutants. The program’s goal is to encourage underrepresented high school students to consider plant science as a future career.

“Public higher education stands as one of the true success stories in our nation’s history. The public
universities stand as a quintessential symbol of who we are and what we stand for as a nation—opportunity,
industry, and community.”
