It is useful to convert between the Metric System and the English System. 4 Step Method Be sure to write your units for everything!! Step 1: Write down the number and the unit that you are starting with. Put it over 1. (anything over 1 is equal to itself) Step 2: Determine what unit you want your answer to be in. Step 3: Find out how to arrive at your final unit by using known conversion factors that equal to 1. Step 4: Set up your conversion factor so that the units cancel. The units on the top of one fraction always goes as the units on the bottom of the next fraction so they can cancel each other out. Example 1 Convert 5 miles into feet. Example 2 How many inches are there on a 120 yard football field? Example 3 How many m are in 85 miles? Example 4 How many meters in a 1.5 miles? Example 5 *** If a car is traveling at a speed of 70 miles/hour, how many meters per second is it going?
