National Honor Society
Great Oak High School
Entering 11th and 12th graders
Background
 The National Honor Society is an
organization founded in 1921 by the
National Association of Secondary
Principals to recognize and encourage
not only academic achievement but
also leadership, service and
character.
Scholarship
The academic requirement for NHS is a
3.6 cumulative grade point average.
This includes grade nine. While A.P.
and I.B. classes are advised, they are
not a mandatory component of the
National Honor Society.
Leadership
 Chief among the qualities we seek is
leadership. The individuals who are the leaders
of tomorrow are also the leaders of today.
They serve as excellent examples of service to
their school and community, they are
committed to academic excellence, and they
are devoted to integrity and honesty.
Leadership is defined as a position of
responsibility over others for which you
have been elected or selected by an
advisor.
Service
 We seek students who work within their
community. These students provide hope and
guidance for a peaceful, safe world in which all
people are valued, cared for, and given the
opportunity to live full and rich lives. Service
should be regardless of race, religion or creed,
and there should be quite a few hours. 75
hours are recommended.
Character
NHS members shall be of impeccable
character in order to serve as walking
role models for the rest of the
community. While we realize that all
people make mistakes, we demand a
high level of integrity. NHS students
should not have any N’s or U’s on
their report cards in the areas of work
habits or citizenship.
NHS requirements
Students who are accepted into NHS are
required to fulfill the following:
 One group service project per year
 One individual project before
graduation
