Intergraph and Intelligent Transportation Joe K. Gillis, Jr. - SG&I PSG North America 11/6/2015 Welcome and Introduction My Interest in Intelligent Transportation (ITS) College background – Civil Engineering (BS and MS degrees) co-specialized in transportation Intergraph background – Proposals (GIS, Civil Engineering, Utilities), – Certification, development and support (CAD/Records) Page 2 What is Intelligent Transportation? ITS uses technology instead of infrastructure to: Increase traffic flow Decrease congestion Reduce fuel costs Improve public safety Decrease emergency vehicle response time Page 3 Examples of ITS Technology Transportation Management Center (TMC) Ramp Metering Controllers Traffic Cameras Highway segment speed metrics Traffic Signal Controllers Page 4 ITS Images Page 5 ITS Deliverables ITS provides information to the Public Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) Traveler Advisory Radio Web Traffic Information Portal Cell Phone/PDA Alerts ITS provides information to CAD/EMA Detection and Verification of major incidents Video surveillance and analysis for suspects/offenders Override automatic routing of emergency vehicles When to Close or Open roads or Force Green Lights Page 6 ITS Deliverables (more) CAD/EMA uses the ITS to provide information to the Public Advance notice of major incidents, expected delays, road closures/alternative routes Weather Bulletins (Tornado/Hurricane/Flood/Ice/Snow/Fog) Amber Alerts (Missing persons) Homeland Security (Terrorist attack) Page 7 Sample Web ITS Application Georgia’s Navigator – – – – Incidents Message Signs Cameras Average Speeds Page 8 Benefits of Intelligent Transportation Problems to Solve: (study period since 1982) Annual delay per rush hour period per traveler has tripled Annual fiscal cost of traffic congestion has quadrupled Annual wasted fuel from idling engines is 5.6 billion gallons Measured Benefits: Accidents reduced 24 to 50% while increasing speeds by 13 to 48%. Advanced traffic surveillance and signal control systems have resulted in travel time improvements ranging from 8 to 25%. Traffic management systems, have reduced crashes by 24 to 50% while handling 8 to 22% more traffic at speeds 13 to 48% faster than pre-existing congested conditions. Incident management programs can reduce delays associated with congestion caused by incidents on highways by 10 to 45%. Page 9 What is the Position of Intergraph? Intergraph’s Mission “To enable businesses and governments to make better and faster operational decisions, to have technology that enables them to make the world safer …. Domestic Customers – Existing Intergraph CAD Customers w/o ITS – Sell ITS SW/Services and integration with our CAD system – Existing ITS from Other Vendors w/o CAD – Sell Intergraph CAD SW/Services and integration with their existing ITS – New Prospects to sell both CAD and ITS as well as other SG&I products such as an integrated Homeland Security solution International Customers – Countries/Regions with ITS Organizations: Canada, Australia, Europe, Japan, Singapore and, South America (These match up with our International CAD customer base.) – Emerging Nations with large potential: China and India Page 18 CAD customers with ITS: ***DELETED/Proprietary Information*** Page 19 CAD Customers without ITS ***DELETED/Proprietary Information*** Page 20 Locations w/o Intergraph CAD or ITS ***DELETED/Proprietary Information*** Page 21 Who are the Decision Makers? State DOT’s Regional Planning Commissions City and County Engineering Departments “These are the ones to whom to make the pitch for Intergraph’s set of Homeland Security Solutions” Page 22 ITS Project Financial Resources Congressional Budgeting via Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy For Users (TEA-LU). Federal matching Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funds – by showing how ITS can reduce air pollution and/or improve air quality Homeland Security funds – ITS specifications must be addressed properly. Private/Public Partnerships – with Local television news media (traffic cameras) and Local businesses (fiber optic cable) Local Government bond issue – show taxpayers how dollars will be saved by consumers and the government after ITS implementation Toll Roads – Rapid-pay speed pass technology is actually a segment of ITS that helps pay for itself directly Page 23 Recommended ITS Approach Organize a ‘Tiger Team’: Public Safety and Local Government, Federal Solutions and Transportation and Photogrammetry - common working solution. And common mapping platform – likely GeoMedia. Participate in ITS America (Intergraph is a member of ITS Georgia – the nearest state chapter) Establish University connections ***DELETED/Proprietary Information*** Participate in ITS XML Standards definition and development activities.
