The Department of International Affairs
advises the General Secretariat on
relations with our international partners
to further the Organization's aims
through fostering positive relations with
Member States, Permanent Observers,
institutions and individuals involved in
advancing the Inter-American Agenda,
as well as mobilizing needed resources.

Functions
 Advises OAS units on matters regarding
relations between the Organization and
Permanent Observer Countries and multilateral
organizations.
 Coordinates relations with the Permanent
Observers so as to provide them with
information on the role of the Organization and
to secure support for OAS activities.
 Coordinates relations with institutions and
legislative and executive bodies of the host
country in order to strengthen ties and provide
information on the region and OAS programs.

international financial institutions, the private

civil society organizations in order to increase
their participation in OAS activities

Relations
with Civil
Society

Advises the Secretary General on all matters
relating to civil society and directs and
coordinates activities in this area with all the
dependencies of the General Secretariat.

Provides secretariat services and technical
support to the Committee on Inter-American
Summits Management and Civil Society
Participation in OAS Activities of the Permanent
Council in all matters related to civil society
participation.

Society

Develops and executes strategies and
activities designed to promote and broaden civil
society participation in all the activities related to
the work of the Organization.

Coordinates relations with nongovernmental
organizations and promotes and harmonizes the
work of the different dependencies of the
General Secretariat in their efforts to encourage
civil society to take part in the Organization’s
activities.

Conducts the process of registering civil
society organizations in the OAS.

On April 4, 13 cadets from the United States
Military Academy visited the OAS.
On April 8, 20 officers from the Canadian
Forces College spent the morning at the
historic OAS headquarters
The goal of the OAS Briefings Program is to promote greater
international and local awareness and understanding of the OAS
and of its General Secretariat.
Briefings are offered to diplomats, government officials, military
officers, university faculty, policy analysts and students, tailored
to the specific interests of the visiting groups. They cover
political, social, legal and economic issues in the Americas as
well as the work of the organization and include tours of the
OAS historical buildings.

LECTURE SERIES OF THE AMERICAS
Outreach

Lecture
Series
To establish the “Lecture Series of the Americas,”
which will consist of monthly lectures on issues
related, above all, to the Strengthening of
Democracy, the Promotion and Protection of
Human Rights, Social Development and the Fight
against Poverty, and Hemispheric Security, to
which the OAS will invite leading intellectuals from
the region and the rest of the world.

The Model OAS General Assembly (MOAS) promotes
democracy among the youth of the Hemisphere by
familiarizing students, faculty and academic institutions of the
Americas with the work of the OAS and its Member States, as
well as with the Organization’s role as the premier political
forum in the Hemisphere by engaging students in an active

efforts to maintain effective substantive contacts
with other intergovernmental institutions, both
public and private.
