ARE YOU A DISCIPLE OF JESUS?
The word disciple literally means learner, it
denotes "one who follows another's teaching" Vine's
Luke 6:40 "A disciple is not above his teacher, but
everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his
teacher.
1 Corinthians 11: Imitate me, just as I also
imitate Christ.
A disciple is one who abides in Jesus’ words.
John 8:31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who
believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are
My disciples indeed. 32 "And you shall know the
truth, and the truth shall make you free."
2 John 1:9 Whoever transgresses and does not
abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God.
He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both
the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to
you and does not bring this doctrine, do not
receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for
he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.
Matthew 7:21" Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,'
shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the
will of My Father in heaven. 22 "Many will say to Me in
that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your
name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many
wonders in Your name?' 23 "And then I will declare to
them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who
practice lawlessness!' 24 ¶ " Therefore whoever hears
these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a
wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 "and the
rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and
beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded
on the rock. 26 "But everyone who hears these sayings of
Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man
who built his house on the sand: 27 "and the rain
descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat
on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall."
James 1:21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and
overflow of wickedness, and receive with
meekness the implanted word, which is able to
save your souls. 22 ¶ But be doers of the word,
and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23
For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a
doer, he is like a man observing his natural face
in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes
away, and immediately forgets what kind of man
he was. 25 But he who looks into the perfect law
of liberty and continues in it, and is not a
forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one
will be blessed in what he does.
A disciple of Christ is one who loves the brethren.
As Jesus said:
John 13:34 "A new commandment I give to you,
that you love one another; as I have loved you,
that you also love one another. 35 "By this all
will know that you are My disciples, if you have
love for one another."
1 Corinthians 12:25 that there should be no
schism in the body, but that the members should
have the same care for one another. 26 And if
one member suffers, all the members suffer with
it; or if one member is honored, all the members
rejoice with it.
A disciple of Christ is one who bears fruit. As
Jesus said:
John 15:8 "By this My Father is glorified, that you
bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
Matthew 5:16 "Let your light so shine before
men, that they may see your good works and
glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 25:21 …'Well done, good and faithful
servant; you were faithful over a few things, I
will make you ruler over many things. Enter into
the joy of your lord.'
John 15:1 "I am the true vine, and My Father is
the vinedresser. 2 "Every branch in Me that does
not bear fruit He takes away;
Matthew 25:26 'You wicked and lazy servant…
30 …cast the unprofitable servant into the outer
darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of
teeth.'
Luke 14:25 Now great multitudes went with Him.
And He turned and said to them, 26 "If anyone
comes to Me and does not hate his father and
mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters,
yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My
disciple.
Matthew 10:34- " Do not think that I came to
bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring
peace but a sword. 35 "For I have come to 'set a
man against his father, a daughter against her
mother, and a daughter-in-law against her
mother-in-law'; 36 "and 'a man's enemies will be
those of his own household.' 37 "He who loves
father or mother more than Me is not worthy of
Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than
Me is not worthy of Me.
Luke 9:23- Then He said to them all, "If anyone
desires to come after Me, let him deny himself,
and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24
"For whoever desires to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.
25 "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the
whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?
2 Timothy 3:12 Yes, and all who desire to live
godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
Luke 14:28 For which of you, intending to build a
tower, does not sit down first and count the cost,
whether he has enough to finish it -- 29 "lest,
after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to
finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30
"saying, 'This man began to build and was not
able to finish.' 31 "Or what king, going to make
war against another king, does not sit down first
and consider whether he is able with ten
thousand to meet him who comes against him
with twenty thousand? 32 "Or else, while the
other is still a great way off, he sends a
delegation and asks conditions of peace. 33 "So
likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that
he has cannot be My disciple.
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love
toward us, in that while we were still sinners,
Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now
been justified by His blood, we shall be saved
from wrath through Him.
2 Thessalonians 1:6 since it is a righteous thing
with God to repay with tribulation those who
trouble you, 7 and to give you who are troubled
rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from
heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire
taking vengeance on those who do not know God,
and on those who do not obey the gospel of our
Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with
everlasting destruction from the presence of the
Lord and from the glory of His power,
10 when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in
His saints and to be admired among all those who
believe, because our testimony among you was
believed. 11 Therefore we also pray always for
you that our God would count you worthy of this
calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His
goodness and the work of faith with power, 12
that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be
glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the
grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:17 For our light affliction, which
is but for a moment, is working for us a far more
exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while
we do not look at the things which are seen, but
at the things which are not seen. For the things
which are seen are temporary, but the things
which are not seen are eternal.
John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you, My peace I
give to you; not as the world gives do I give to
you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it
be afraid.
As you think about your life and your relationship
with God, are you being a disciple of Christ?
Are you putting in the time and the effort that it
takes to bear fruit and glory and honor to our
Father in heaven?
Have you really considered the cost of
discipleship?
