Tournaments
Provincially, each discipline hosts Club competitions from March
through to November each year. All gymnasts (including those at
schools) are invited to participate.
Each year (June or July) a Zonal Interprovincial competition takes
place in 4 centres in the disciplines of WAG, MAG and RG. TID
takes place at Provincial trials.
WAG also hosts the Naledi Cup each year (Provincially and
Nationally) for schools – team event.
The SA National Gym Games takes place every year in Sept/Oct
across 8 disciplines.
The National Schools tournament takes place during this event
across 5 disciplines – team event. TID takes place here.
It must be noted that events for children under the age of 8 will
be participatory in nature as opposed to competitive, in line with
the SAGF LTPD policy.
League structures 2011 - 2012
Implementation is due from August – November 2011.
Initially will start with 2 disciplines in 2 Districts within each
Province.
SAGF level 1-3 programs in each discipline will be used.
Roll out will continue until all districts are involved.
Challenges
Funding, Leadership and Communication
Unless there is sufficient funding from all stakeholders, very few of these
events will reach their full potential.
Few teachers are actively coaching due to a lack of knowledge. Most coaching
is done by Federation coaches. Pockets of activity, driven by passionate
people will happen.
Communication between Provincial Federations, Schools sport structures,
DSR and DBE’s is woeful at best, non-existent in some cases.
Unless everyone shares the common vision of having healthy and active
children, we will never be a nation that wins consistently. Strong leadership
and a structure that is recognised by all parties is required.
Way forward
Structures in place at in all levels of involvement
LTPD – in place and will be launched in June 2011
Education and training vital to the success of our leagues
and tournaments. LTCD plan is in progress and will be ready
in June.
Communication, capacity and co-operation are essential
for the success of Gymnastics
