SULTANATE OF OMAN Time Use Survey For the Period 20/5/2007 – 19/5/2008 INTRODUCTION The Time Use Survey studies the activities performed by the individual during a day (24 hours), which include activities carried out inside or outside the home such as taking care of children, cleaning, social visits, going to work….etc. The kind of activities and the time spent on them can be used in economic analysis in areas like (women participation in economic activities, value of home production and the informal sector production, productivity, time poverty ….etc. INTRODUCTION The report studies the activities performed by an individual (15 years of age and above) during the day (24 hours. A sample representing the whole of the Sultanate and with a sample size of 2,500 Omani and non-Omani families. It is worth noting that we conducted the Time Use Survey for the first time during the period 20/5/2000 to 19/5/2001. SURVEY OBJECTIVES Identify patterns of Time Use for individuals by economic and social activity…etc Identify the economic activity of women Measure productivity. Determine the Informal sectors size and the Time spent by individuals in these sectors Measure time poverty. SURVEY METHODOLOGY The main ideas of the Survey plan are summarized as follows: The Survey period will be for 12 months. The questionnaire has to be filled in a randomly chosen day within the third week from the recording of the household expenditure. It is important for the person who fills the questionnaire to refrain from choosing the date which will be chosen by the researcher. All days of the week and holidays must be represented to reflect the seasonality of the time use during the year. Includes drinking and eating in restaurants. However taking light meals at friends house or when watching TV are not considered as a main activity. Paid for services such as hair cut are considered as part of shopping. Personal care and short rest periods during school hours are considered as part of school activity. Includes personal care, taking meals ,traveling, reading……etc during working hours but not including going to and coming back from work. Includes private accounting business and family commercial business excluding agriculture, fishing, weaving works even if for sale. Time Use Activities Activity Agriculture Fishing Shopping and paid for services Weaving and tailoring…etc Care for children Description Includes small size garden products intended for home consumption and sale. Includes fishing for own consumption and sale ,excluding fishing for entertainment only (this latter activity is recorded as a hobby) Includes paid-for personal care services such as hair cut , visits to doctors, vehicle service and banking services……etc all payments related to shopping will be classified as traveling. Includes weaving for sale or own use but excluding textile mending (recorded as house work). Includes care for all individuals in and outside the house. Care paid- for is considered employment. Time Use Activities Activity Moving Description Moving to and from work or school. Traveling Includes all kinds of traveling and journeys except moving and traveling within working hours, and includes even walking, if not intended as an exercise. Long journeys are often accompanied by activities such as taking meals and personal care ……etc. TV watching More often become a secondary activity, especially outside the house, but comes in the first place if you are only taking a light meal or drinking at the same time. Reading Sitting with the family All types of reading except homework reading at school and reading at work. If not performing any other activity. Time Use Activities Activity Description Exercising All types of sports including walking if not intended for moving from one place to another. Social visits Taking meals with friends will be recorded as eating if it is more than just having light meals. Watching TV at friend’s house is recorded as secondary activity. Exercising hobbies Includes gardening, fishing and other production activities intended for mere leisure.
